Chapter 5 - THE WARMTH OF A HOME

Three months later.
The rain had finally given way to a brilliant, crisp spring morning that flooded the Montesi estate with golden light.
The north garden, once overgrown and neglected, was now filled with the sound of childish laughter.
Dario Montesi sat on a wrought-iron bench beneath the blooming cherry blossoms, a thick corporate ledger resting open on his lap, though his attention wasn't on the numbers.
A small plastic duck came flying through the air, landing square in his lap.
“Papa-Dario! Throw it back!”
Dario looked up, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his face—a smile that the old Dario Montesi would have considered a fatal weakness, but which now felt like the only real thing in his life.
Lila came running across the green lawn, her bright yellow dress fluttering in the breeze, her cheeks flushed with excitement. Behind her walked Nora, carrying a tray with two cups of steaming coffee and a plate of fresh pastries, her steps light and carefree, her eyes shining with a peace she hadn't known in a lifetime.
Dario picked up the plastic duck, tossed it high into the air, and caught Lila as she launched herself into his arms with a squeal of pure joy.

He swung her around, burying his face in her curls, breathing in the scent of sunshine and baby shampoo.
The mafia boss who had come home three days early to a dark, silent mansion realized that sometimes, the most important decisions in life aren't made in boardrooms or negotiation rooms. Sometimes, salvation comes in the form of a three-year-old girl with polish-stained hands, a broken teddy bear, and a gentle lullaby that finally, after twenty-five long years, turned a house back into a home.
