Chapter 2: Why the Billionaire Was Looking for Emma 😱💼

The street erupted into whispers.

"He was looking for her?"

"The waitress?"

"That doesn't make any sense."

Emma stared at the business card in her hand.

Then at Jonathan Cross.

Then back at the card.

Surely there had been some mistake.

A ridiculous misunderstanding.

People like Jonathan Cross didn't search for waitresses.

They bought companies.

Funded skyscrapers.

Changed industries.

They didn't walk into diners looking for someone like her.

"Mr. Cross..."

Emma swallowed.

"I think you have the wrong person."

The billionaire smiled.

"No."

His answer came instantly.

"I don't."

The manager looked ready to faint.

Five minutes earlier he had fired Emma.

Now one of the richest men in America was speaking to her as though she mattered.

The irony wasn't lost on anyone.

Especially the customers who had watched the entire scene unfold.

Cross gestured toward one of the SUVs.

"Walk with me."

Emma hesitated.

The crowd leaned closer.

Even the manager forgot to breathe.

Finally Emma nodded.

She followed him a short distance away from the gathering.

The security team gave them space.

Not much.

But enough.

Cross looked at her carefully.

Studying her face.

Her eyes.

The small silver necklace around her neck.

Then he asked a strange question.

"How old are you?"

Emma blinked.

"Twenty-four."

Cross nodded slowly.

As though confirming something.

"What was your mother's name?"

Emma's stomach tightened.

The question felt oddly personal.

"Grace Parker."

Something flickered across Cross's face.

Relief.

Pure relief.

"Oh, thank God."

Emma froze.

"What?"

The billionaire looked away briefly.

As though collecting himself.

Then he laughed softly.

A laugh filled with emotion.

For the first time since arriving, he looked less like a billionaire and more like a man carrying a burden.

"I've been searching for you for almost a year."

The words hit her like a truck.

"A year?"

Cross nodded.

"Since your mother died."

Emma felt her heart stop.

Nobody ever mentioned her mother.

Not anymore.

The loss still hurt too much.

"How do you know my mother?"

For a moment, Cross didn't answer.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folded photograph.

And handed it to her.

Emma's breath caught.

The photo showed two young people standing beside an old motorcycle.

A smiling woman.

And a smiling man.

Her mother.

And Jonathan Cross.

Twenty-five years younger.

Laughing together.

Looking inseparable.

Emma stared.

Unable to speak.

"My mother knew you?"

Cross smiled sadly.

"Knew me?"

His eyes glistened.

"Emma, your mother saved my life."

The world seemed to pause.

Traffic noise disappeared.

The crowd disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

Except those words.

Cross looked toward the horizon.

As though remembering.

"Twenty-six years ago, I wasn't a billionaire."

He chuckled.

"I barely had enough money to buy gas."

Emma listened quietly.

"I was riding through Colorado."

His voice softened.

"I crashed my motorcycle."

The memory still hurt.

"You know who found me?"

Emma already knew.

But she whispered it anyway.

"My mother."

Cross nodded.

"Everyone else drove past."

The similarity hit her immediately.

Just like today.

Just like the diner.

Everyone had watched.

Only one person had helped.

Cross continued.

"Your mother stayed with me for six hours."

He smiled.

"She gave me water."

Emma's eyes widened.

The same thing she had done.

The same thing.

Exactly.

"She saved my life."

His voice cracked.

"And before I left, I made her a promise."

Emma's pulse quickened.

"What promise?"

Cross looked directly at her.

"If she ever needed anything, I'd be there."

Silence.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"I broke that promise."

Emma frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Pain filled the billionaire's eyes.

"The company grew."

"Life happened."

"We lost contact."

He lowered his head.

"And when I finally found her again..."

His voice broke completely.

"It was too late."

Emma felt tears gathering.

Because she already knew what came next.

Her mother had died last year after a long illness.

Alone.

Poor.

Working until she physically couldn't anymore.

Cross nodded.

As if reading her thoughts.

"I arrived three days after her funeral."

The guilt in his voice was unbearable.

"Three days."

The billionaire who could buy anything in the world...

had arrived three days too late.

Then he reached into his jacket again.

This time he removed a sealed envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Protected.

Clearly carried for a long time.

Across the front were four handwritten words.

For Emma Only

Emma's knees weakened.

Because she recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother's.

Cross handed her the envelope carefully.

"I found this among her belongings."

His voice softened.

"She left it for you."

Emma's hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

And a key.

A very unusual key.

Old brass.

Heavy.

Attached to a faded tag.

Emma unfolded the letter.

The first line made her cry immediately.

My sweet Emma,

If you're reading this, Jonathan finally found you.

The world stopped.

Because somehow...

her mother had known.

Known he would come.

Known he would find her.

Known this day would happen.

Emma continued reading.

Then suddenly froze.

Her eyes widened.

Her breathing stopped.

Cross immediately noticed.

"What is it?"

Emma looked up.

Completely stunned.

Then back at the letter.

Then back at him.

"That's impossible."

The billionaire's stomach tightened.

"What?"

Emma's voice trembled.

Because the letter contained a secret she never imagined.

A secret her mother had hidden for twenty-four years.

A secret connected to the brass key.

A secret that changed everything she thought she knew about her family.

Emma looked directly at Jonathan Cross.

And whispered:

"Mom says... you're not just the man who saved us."

Her voice broke.

"She says you're my father."

The entire street fell silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Because suddenly...

Jonathan Cross wasn't searching for a waitress.

He was searching for his daughter.

TO BE CONTINUED...
