Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Trap

At 9:58 the next morning, Silvio Rinaldi walked into the forty-third-floor boardroom of Rinaldi Holdings carrying the metal evidence case.

Dominic Vescari stood at the windows.

Gray suit.

Silver tie.

Perfect posture.

He looked like a grandfather waiting for family breakfast.

Around the table sat twelve directors.

Some frightened.

Some confused.

Two were clearly Dominic’s men.

Silvio recognized them now.

That was the terrible thing about betrayal.

After it was revealed, the signs looked embarrassingly obvious.

Dominic smiled.

“Silvio.”

“Dominic.”

“Sit.”

Silvio remained standing.

“Where is Isabella?”

“Safe.”

“Proof.”

Dominic gestured.

A monitor activated.

Matteo’s daughter sat in a furnished room eating cereal.

A masked man stood near the door.

Silvio studied the room.

Pink curtains.

White lamp.

Wooden floor.

Nothing identifiable.

“Live?”

Dominic lifted his phone.

The masked man on screen raised three fingers.

Silvio’s jaw tightened.

“Now sign.”

Anthony placed the restructuring documents on the table.

His hands trembled convincingly.

Dominic looked amused.

“Nervous, counselor?”

“Very.”

“Smart man.”

Silvio opened the document.

“You really think this ends well?”

Dominic sat.

“I think it ends.”

Silvio picked up a pen.

Elsewhere, Nora sat inside a van three blocks away.

Headphones covered her ears.

Elias worked at a laptop beside her.

Matteo paced like a caged animal.

The plan depended on four things.

Dominic believing Silvio was desperate.

Anthony getting access to the boardroom network.

Elias identifying Isabella’s location from the video feed.

And Maya Reyes deciding she preferred prison to being murdered by Dominic.

The last part had taken surprisingly little persuasion.

Maya knew Dominic eliminated liabilities.

Silvio offered her federal protection in exchange for full cooperation.

She provided safe-house addresses.

They had searched three.

Empty.

Then Elias noticed something in Isabella’s video.

A train horn.

He replayed it.

Again.

Again.

“Freight line.”

Matteo stopped pacing.

“Where?”

Elias compared the timing to rail schedules.

“North Jersey.”

Nora leaned closer to the screen.

Behind Isabella, partly reflected in the lamp’s metal base, was a window.

Outside it stood red letters.

Only two visible.

R.

O.

Nora stared.

“Zoom.”

Elias enlarged the reflection.

More letters.

C R O W N.

Matteo froze.

“Crown Storage.”

“Know it?”

“Dominic owns an interest in a warehouse near Secaucus.”

Elias searched.

Found it.

Matteo grabbed his coat.

Nora stood.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

She stared.

“Not having this argument again.”

Matteo almost laughed despite himself.

“You spend too much time with Silvio.”

They left with Maya and a federal tactical team that had finally been brought into the operation after Silvio delivered copies of Elias’s evidence to prosecutors.

Back in the boardroom, Dominic pushed the document closer.

“Signature.”

Silvio looked at him.

“I used to think you were the smartest man I knew.”

Dominic smiled.

“I still am.”

“No.”

Silvio signed the first page.

Dominic watched carefully.

“You were just the best liar.”

Second page.

Signature.

Third.

Dominic relaxed.

“You’re angry.”

“My father called you his brother.”

“Victor called too many people family.”

“You ordered his death.”

“I corrected a problem.”

Silvio stopped writing.

Several directors stared in horror.

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

Silvio leaned back.

“Say that again.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

Then he understood.

The room was recording.

He looked toward Anthony.

Anthony smiled faintly.

Dominic stood.

“You stupid—”

The boardroom doors opened.

Federal agents entered.

“Dominic Vescari, do not move.”

Dominic did not panic.

He smiled.

Then pressed a button on his phone.

The video of Isabella vanished.

Silvio stood.

Dominic whispered, “You really thought it was that easy?”

An explosion sounded several floors below.

The building shook.

Sprinklers activated.

Alarms screamed.

Directors ran.

Agents surrounded Dominic.

But smoke began filling the hallway.

Silvio understood.

“Fire evacuation.”

Anthony shouted, “He planned an extraction!”

Dominic’s security attacked from outside the conference room.

Gunfire erupted.

Agents returned fire.

Silvio tackled Dominic behind the table.

The old man pulled a small pistol from an ankle holster.

Silvio knocked it away.

They struggled.

For a seventy-two-year-old man, Dominic was shockingly strong.

Hatred helped.

“You were always weak,” Dominic hissed.

Silvio punched him.

“You confused restraint with weakness.”

Dominic laughed through blood.

“Your father said the same thing.”

Silvio froze for half a second.

Dominic used it.

He shoved Silvio into the table and ran through the smoke.

Agents pursued.

By the time Silvio reached the emergency stairwell, Dominic was gone.

A maintenance uniform lay abandoned on the landing.

Silvio’s phone rang.

Nora.

He answered.

“Tell me.”

“We found Crown Storage.”

“And Isabella?”

“Not yet.”

A gunshot sounded through Nora’s phone.

Silvio’s blood went cold.

“Nora?”

No answer.

“Nora!”

Then her voice returned.

“We’re okay.”

Silvio gripped the phone.

“Do not say that casually.”

Despite everything, Nora almost laughed.

“We’re entering now.”

“You should be outside.”

“You’re beginning to repeat yourself.”

“Nora.”

“We’ll call you.”

The line went dead.

At Crown Storage, Nora followed behind the federal team.

She should have been afraid.

She was.

But fear had become something different over the last few days.

Less like a wall.

More like weather.

Something you moved through.

They found two guards.

One surrendered.

One ran.

Matteo found Isabella upstairs.

When the door opened, the little girl screamed, then launched herself into her father’s arms.

Matteo dropped to his knees.

“I’m here.”

Isabella cried against his neck.

Nora looked away, overwhelmed.

Elias called from the van.

“You need to leave.”

“Why?”

“I intercepted a message.”

“What message?”

“Dominic’s coming there.”

Nora turned.

“What?”

“He escaped the boardroom.”

Maya swore.

Matteo picked up Isabella.

“Move.”

They descended.

Outside, SUVs approached.

Not federal.

Black.

Dominic’s men.

Gunfire erupted.

The tactical team returned fire.

Nora crouched behind concrete barriers.

Matteo carried Isabella toward an armored van.

Then one of Dominic’s vehicles crashed through the gate.

A man exited.

Dominic.

He held a gun.

Maya saw him.

“Dominic!”

He fired.

The bullet struck Maya’s vest and knocked her down.

Dominic ran toward the warehouse office.

Nora saw something in his hand.

A phone.

Remote detonator.

She remembered Elias’s words.

There’s always a second move.

“Bomb!”

She ran.

Dominic turned toward her.

For the first time, the old man looked at Nora directly.

“Margaret’s daughter.”

Nora stopped.

“You knew my mother.”

“She should have minded her own business.”

Nora’s fear disappeared beneath anger.

“You ruined her life.”

“She made a choice.”

“You kidnapped my brother.”

“He made the same choice.”

Dominic raised the detonator.

“And now you have.”

A black SUV slammed through the side gate.

Silvio exited before it fully stopped.

Dominic turned.

Silvio raised his weapon.

“Drop it.”

Dominic smiled.

“You came.”

Silvio’s eyes moved to Nora.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Dominic laughed.

“Look at you.”

Silvio kept his gun steady.

“What?”

“Risking everything for a waitress.”

Nora’s jaw tightened.

Silvio’s answer came without hesitation.

“No.”

Dominic frowned.

“I’m risking everything because you taught me what happens when powerful men decide ordinary lives don’t matter.”

The words silenced even Dominic for a moment.

Then he raised the detonator.

Silvio fired.

The bullet struck Dominic’s shoulder.

He dropped the device.

Nora kicked it away.

Agents rushed forward.

Dominic fell against the wall.

Silvio approached.

Dominic looked up.

“You won’t kill me.”

“No.”

“You’ve gotten soft.”

Silvio shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

He lowered the gun.

“Living long enough to watch everything you built disappear is worse.”

Federal agents handcuffed Dominic Vescari.

And for the first time in thirty years, he had no one left to order around.
