Chapter 5: The Retaliation of the Untouchable

Daniel Carter was not a man who accepted ruin gracefully. Two weeks after the courtroom disaster, his corporate empire was in freefall. His board of directors, terrified of the public relations nightmare surrounding the child abuse and asset fraud recordings, voted to suspend him as CEO. Victoria, his mistress in Boston, had vanished the moment the federal marshals froze the Cayman accounts, taking everything she could carry.

Desperate, broke, and facing a potential five-year federal prison sentence for tax fraud and perjury, Daniel broke the restraining order.

It was a stormy Tuesday evening. The rain was drumming furiously against the kitchen windows of Emily’s house. Lucas and Mason were upstairs in their bedroom, building a fort out of cardboard boxes.

Emily was standing near the stove, making hot chocolate, when the glass in the back patio door suddenly shattered.

She screamed, dropping the ceramic mug as the heavy door swung open, and Daniel stepped into the kitchen. He wasn't wearing his tailored suit anymore. His clothes were soaked, his hair wild, and his eyes bloodshot with a desperate, unhinged fury.

"You think you’re clever, Emily?" Daniel hissed, shaking his wet hands as he advanced toward her. "You think you can take my company? You think you can use my own son to put me in a cage? I built everything you see! I own you!"

"Daniel, get out!" Emily shouted, backing away toward the counter, her hand reaching behind her for the wall phone. "The police are on their way! The security system already alerted them when the glass broke!"

"I don't care about the police!" Daniel roared, lunging forward and grabbing her arms, his fingers digging into her skin with a strength born of pure panic. "Where is the recorder, Emily? Where are the backup files your lawyers gave to the federal prosecutor? Give them to me, or I swear to God I will take the boys out of this country tonight and you will never see them again!"

"Let go of my mom!" a voice yelled from the doorway.

Daniel froze.

Lucas stood at the entrance of the kitchen. He wasn't holding a toy or a recording device this time. He was holding his father's old iron golf club—the one Daniel had left in the umbrella stand by the door. The nine-year-old boy’s hands were shaking, his face pale, but his stance was solid. Behind him, Mason was holding a heavy ceramic flashlight, his eyes wide but fierce.

"Lucas, stay back!" Emily cried out, trying to twist out of Daniel’s grip.

Daniel looked at his son, a bitter, twisted laugh escaping his lips. "You think you’re a man now, Lucas? You think you can hit your own father with that?"

"You aren't my father," Lucas said, his voice dropping into that same quiet, steady register that had silenced the courtroom two weeks ago. "Our father protects us. You just live in our house. Step away from my mom, or I will use this."

Before Daniel could move, the front door was kicked open. The flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers illuminated the rainy windows. Four officers burst into the kitchen with their weapons drawn.

"Police! Drop the weapon! Hands where I can see them!"

Daniel looked at the officers, then at the iron club in his son’s hands, and finally at Emily, who had managed to break free and pull both boys behind her body. The illusion of his control, his wealth, and his untouchable status dissolved entirely in the cold light of the kitchen. He slowly raised his hands, falling to his knees on the wet linoleum floor as the officers moved in to handcuff him.
