Chapter 6 - The House of Light

Six months later. May 2027.
The Duca estate rose garden was in full, glorious bloom. Red, white, and pink roses blanketed the stone terraces, filling the warm spring air with a sweet, intoxicating perfume that drifted across the expansive lawns.
It was a bright, perfect Saturday afternoon.
The grand stone terrace behind the main house was set for a festive family celebration—Emma’s fourth birthday.
A long wooden dining table was decorated with yellow tablecloths, fresh wildflowers, and a massive three-tiered chocolate cake baked personally by Marco Bellini, who was currently bustling around the outdoor grill, roasting skewers and laughing loudly with the staff.
The entire household staff—fourteen people in total—sat around the table, celebrating not as master and servants, but as a real, unified family.
I sat at the head of the table, wearing a light yellow summer dress, my dark hair falling in soft waves over my shoulders.
Beside me sat Lorenzo.
He had completely discarded his corporate suits for the day, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the collar open, his silver watch gleaming under the bright May sun. His arm rested naturally across the back of my chair, his fingers occasionally brushing against my shoulder in a quiet, possessive gesture of deep affection.
"Look, Mommy! Look, Lorenzo!" a high, joyful voice called out across the lawn.
We turned to look.
Emma came running across the green grass on her energetic four-year-old feet, wearing a white sundress and a flower crown made of daisies. In her hands, she held her large wooden sketchbook, waving it proudly above her head.
"Show us, sweetheart!" I called out, smiling warmly as she skidded to a stop beside Lorenzo’s chair.
Emma climbed right onto Lorenzo’s lap.
Six months ago, the thought of a child sitting on Lorenzo Duca’s lap would have sent shockwaves through the corporate world. Now, Lorenzo simply wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her close, resting his chin against her dark curls as he looked at her drawing.
Emma opened the sketchbook to the latest page.
It was a vibrant, beautiful pastel drawing of the grand house. The limestone walls were drawn in warm golden shades, surrounded by bright red roses, a clear blue sky, and a massive yellow sun.
In the front yard stood three figures holding hands: a small girl in a yellow dress, a woman with long dark hair, and a tall man in a dark suit.
And across the tall man's cheek, drawn with a precise, proud stroke of French pastel, was a bright green line.
Lorenzo looked at the drawing for a long, quiet moment.
Then he raised his eyes to mine, a deep, radiant, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face—a smile that transformed him completely, making him look younger, happier, and filled with light.
"Is it finished, Emma?" Lorenzo asked gently, turning back to the little girl in his arms.
"Yes," Emma declared proudly, leaning back against his chest. "I gave you a smile, and I gave you green."
"It's perfect," Lorenzo whispered, kissing the top of her head.
He reached under the table, finding my hand and interlocking his fingers with mine, holding on tightly, with no intention of ever letting go.
The dark storms were gone. The cold walls had fallen.

And in their place stood a home—unbroken, beautiful, and forever filled with color.
