Chapter 3 - The Nursery Floor

While the adults played their high-stakes games of manipulation downstairs, the upper floor of the sprawling Whitmore estate remained a quiet sanctuary.

Or at least, it was supposed to be.

In the private nursery suite on the third floor, seven-year-old Maya—Claire’s daughter—was curled up soundly. She had spent the evening coloring in the corner of the staff lounge while her mother worked, until exhaustion finally overtook her small frame.

She had wandered upstairs looking for a quiet place to rest, found the door to Nathaniel’s private library alcove unlocked, and climbed onto the oversized leather Chesterfield sofa.

Now, she was fast asleep, her breathing deep and rhythmic.

Her head rested comfortably against a broad, solid chest beneath a cashmere sweater.

Nathaniel had pushed open the heavy oak doors of the library moments earlier, expecting to find an empty room. Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks.

There, stretched out across his favorite sofa, was the little girl. Her small hands were loosely clutching his shirt, and her dark curls were spread across his chest. She looked so peaceful, so completely unbothered by the chaos raging downstairs, that the cold fury boiling inside Nathaniel instantly melted into something entirely foreign.

He didn't move. He didn't want to wake her.

He stood there in the dimly lit room, looking down at the child of the woman he had just allowed to be humiliated.

— Sir?

Dominic, the estate’s chief security director, whispered from the doorway, holding a portable tablet.

Nathaniel raised a single finger to his lips, gesturing for Dominic to keep his voice down. Carefully, with movements as gentle as a surgeon, Nathaniel slid his arm free from beneath Maya without waking her, propping a soft velvet cushion under her head.

He walked quietly toward the doorway, pulling the heavy library door half-shut behind him.

— Did you pull the footage? Nathaniel asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

— Every camera from the foyer to the service corridors, Dominic replied, handing the tablet over. And Mr. Whitmore... you're going to want to see this.

Nathaniel looked down at the screen.

The high-definition playback showed the service pantry at 7:15 PM—twenty minutes before the bracelet was 'discovered' in Claire’s bag.

The screen showed the pantry door opening.

A figure in an expensive silver evening gown slipped inside, glanced quickly around to ensure the hallway was empty, and pulled a small leather jewelry pouch from a beaded clutch.

It wasn't Claire.

It was Evelyn Rothwell.

The footage clearly showed Evelyn sliding the sapphire bracelet out of the pouch and dropping it directly into the side pocket of Claire’s canvas tote bag, before smoothing down her skirt and walking out with a triumphant, venomous smile.

Nathaniel stared at the screen. The air in the hallway seemed to vanish.

— She didn't just plant it, Dominic added quietly. She coordinated with the head of security to ensure the search team went straight to Claire’s bag within ten minutes of the item being reported missing.

Nathaniel’s hands gripped the edges of the tablet so hard his knuckles turned white. The cold, calculated cruelty of the setup wasn't just an attack on a housekeeper. It was a trap designed to break a proud, innocent woman—and to force Nathaniel into a position where he would have no choice, legally or socially, but to cast her out.

— Where is Evelyn now? Nathaniel asked, his voice dead, flat, and chillingly quiet.

— She’s downstairs in the grand salon, Dominic said. Accepting condolences from the board members about how 'difficult' this whole ordeal must be for the family.

Nathaniel handed the tablet back to his security chief.

— Clear the salon, he commanded softly.

— Sir?

— Clear every single guest out of that room. Tell them the reception is over. And bring Evelyn Rothwell up to the library.

Dominic gave a sharp, professional nod. — It will be done, Mr. Whitmore.
