Chapter 10: A House Divided

The next morning, the tension inside our home was palpable. I hadn't slept a wink. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Preston’s hollowed-out face, smiling at me from the dark.
I found Hannah in the kitchen, furiously typing on her laptop, a stack of legal precedents piled high beside her coffee cup.
"I've drafted the victim impact statement for the board," she said without looking up, her fingers flying across the keys. "I’m getting affidavits from the therapists who treated us after the breakdown. I’m going to make sure the board understands that releasing him is a direct threat to our mental safety."
"Hannah, stop," I said, my voice flat, exhausted.
She paused, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She slowly turned her head to look at me, her eyes narrowing. "What did you say?"
"We might have to let it go," I said, looking down at the counter, unable to meet her gaze. "We might have to let him come home to Mother's house."
Hannah stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "Are you insane? Elena, look at me! Are you losing your mind? After everything we went through, you want to capitulate to him now? When he’s finally down?"
"He called me last night," I confessed, the words spilling out like a shameful secret.
Hannah froze. "He called you? From prison? Why didn't you call the police?"
"Because he has leverage, Hannah!" I yelled back, my control finally snapping. "He has files. Documents about Dad's old business dealings, the origin of the trust fund. He claims he can wipe us out financially and publicly. He’s threatening Sophie’s future. He’s threatening everything!"
"And you believe him?!" Hannah’s voice rose to a crescendo, vibrating with disbelief. "He’s a con man, Elena! A master manipulator! He’s using the oldest trick in the book—fear! He’s bluffing because he’s terrified of dying in a jumpsuit!"
"What if he isn't?!" I roared back, tears of frustration stinging my eyes. "What if he’s telling the truth? Can we risk it? Can we risk Sophie’s name being dragged through a financial scandal? Can we risk losing the house, her tuition, our stability? I can't do it, Hannah! I can't risk her life for a vendetta!"
"It's not a vendetta, it's justice!" Hannah screamed, her face flushed with emotion. "You're doing exactly what our parents did! You're choosing a comfortable lie and financial security over the absolute truth! You're letting him win!"
"I am protecting my child!"
"By bowing to her abuser!"
The words cut through the room like a physical blow. We stood panting, staring at each other across the kitchen island, the bond that had sustained us through the darkest nights of our lives suddenly fracturing under the weight of an impossible choice.
From the doorway, a soft, small voice broke the agonizing silence.
"Mom? Aunt Hannah? What's happening?"
We both spun around. Sophie was standing there, clutching her violin case, her eyes wide with a terrifyingly familiar fear. She looked between the two of us, seeing the anger, the tears, and the wreckage of the peace she thought we had secured.
