Chapter 6 - Sunrise at Valecroft

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over Valecroft, painting the rolling green lawns and the towering iron gates in brilliant shades of gold and amber. The storm of the past was nothing more than a distant memory, replaced by a quiet, enduring peace.

Inside the nursery, seven-month-old Nico was sitting up in his plush playpen, giggling hysterically as he batted a colorful rattle back and forth, his chubby legs kicking with boundless energy.

Liana stood by the window, wearing a soft, floral-print sundress, watching him with a radiant, peaceful smile. The hollow, haunted look in her eyes was gone, replaced by a deep, luminous strength.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.

“He’s getting too fast,” Matteo murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her neck. He looked entirely different than he had six months ago; the harsh, defensive edges of the syndicate king had softened, worn down by the quiet warmth of a real home.

“He takes after his father,” Liana smiled, leaning back against Matteo’s solid chest and placing her hand over his.

“The federal prosecutor’s office just called,” Matteo whispered, resting his forehead against hers. “Elena’s corporate assets have been permanently seized, and she’s permanently relocated to Zurich with zero access to Varric funds. She’ll never bother us again.”

“And the estate?” Liana asked softly.

“The estate is secure,” Matteo replied, turning her around in his arms so she was facing him directly. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, elegant velvet box.

Liana’s breath hitched. She looked up into his slate-gray eyes, which were shining with a profound, unreserved devotion.

“When you knocked on my gate in the rain, Liana, you brought a miracle into the dark,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into a rich, steady baritone. “I never thought I’d let anyone past my walls. I never thought I’d feel anything other than duty and vengeance. But you... you are my life now. Both of you.”

He popped the velvet box open. Resting inside was a breathtaking ring—a vintage platinum band set with a brilliant, flawless diamond flanked by two smaller emeralds, sparkling in the morning light.

“Marry me, Liana,” Matteo whispered. “Be a mother to my son, and let me spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to walk alone in the rain again.”

Liana didn't hesitate. A warm, brilliant tear spilled over her eyelashes, but this time, it was a tear of pure, unadulterated joy.

“Yes,” she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck as Matteo pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss.

From the playpen, little Nico let out a happy, bubbling laugh, clapping his tiny hands together as if he understood every word.

The grieving maid and the syndicate king had found their sanctuary. Outside the iron gates, the world went on its ruthless way, but inside the Valecroft estate, the storm had finally passed, leaving behind a dawn that would never fade.
