Chapter 10 - Empire of the HeartThe rain began to fall again outside the Bluebird Grill, tapping a gentle, rhythmic cadence against the front window.

Inside, the diner was warm, smelling of butter, vanilla, and strong black coffee. The neon sign cast a steady, comforting blue glow across the checkered floor, welcoming anyone who walked in out of the storm.

Dominic Rinaldi sat beside Nora, watching her laugh as her mother told an embarrassing childhood story from across the room. He didn't feel the crushing weight of the syndicate on his shoulders anymore. The criminal empire his father had built on fear and blood had been dismantled, restructured, and turned into something legitimate—a vast network of real estate, construction, and community projects managed by people who knew what it meant to struggle and survive.

Marcus Thorne walked in through the front door, shaking the rain from his shoulders, and slid a thick manila folder onto the counter in front of Dominic.

"All the title transfers for the West End properties went through this morning, Boss," Marcus said quietly. "The community center is fully funded. The foundation is officially registered under your mother's name."

Dominic opened the folder, scanned the legal documents, and signed his name at the bottom in bold, clean strokes.

"Good," Dominic said, handing the folder back. "Take the rest of the week off, Marcus."

Marcus raised an eyebrow, a rare grin touching the corner of his mouth. "You sure you don't need me to watch your back, Dominic?"

Dominic looked over at Nora, who was pouring a fresh cup of coffee into his mug with steady, confident hands.

"No, Marcus," Dominic said, his gray eyes shining with a quiet, unshakeable peace. "I think for the first time in my life... I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."

As Marcus nodded and stepped back out into the rainy Greyhaven night, Dominic picked up his coffee cup, clinked it gently against Nora’s mug, and smiled.

The mafia boss had ordered breakfast at his own diner, and in saving a crying waitress in the kitchen, he had finally learned how to save himself.
