THE SECRET IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

By sunrise, the children were safe.

Doctors examined them.
Food arrived.

Warm blankets replaced torn rags.

For the first time in months, the little ones slept peacefully.

Lily remained cautious.

She didn't trust good fortune.

Not anymore.

The businessman sat beside her in the hospital waiting room.

His name was Victor Hayes.

One of the wealthiest men in the city.

Yet somehow he felt smaller than the twelve-year-old girl beside him.

"You've been taking care of them alone?"

Lily nodded.

"For eight months."

Victor was speechless.

Then something caught his eye.

A photograph sticking out of Lily's backpack.

Old.

Folded.

Worn from years of handling.

"Who's that?"

Lily smiled sadly.

"My mom."

Victor glanced at the picture.

Then froze.

His entire body went rigid.

His hands began shaking.

Because he recognized the woman instantly.

Twenty years earlier, before he became wealthy, there had been someone he loved.

Someone named Sarah.

A woman who disappeared without explanation.

A woman he had searched for for years.

The woman in Lily's photograph was Sarah.

Older.

But unmistakably Sarah.

Victor looked at Lily again.

Really looked.

The eyes.

The smile.

The shape of her face.

His heart pounded.

"How old are you?"

"Twelve."

Victor suddenly couldn't breathe.

Because twelve years ago was exactly when Sarah vanished forever.

And for the first time, an impossible thought entered his mind.

Could this child be his daughter?
