CHAPTER 2: THE CONTRACT BENEATH THE EMPIRE
The moment Victoria Lawrence left the showroom, the temperature in the room changed.
Not physically.
Financially.
Arthur Sterling stood still for several seconds, as if waiting for reality to correct itself.
It didn’t.
Then his phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Then continuously.
His face tightened.
“Liquidation alerts…” he muttered.
Chloe turned sharply.
“What did you say?”
Arthur didn’t answer immediately.
He opened his phone.
His eyes scanned the screen.
Then went still.
Every luxury asset linked to Sterling Holdings had just entered a temporary compliance freeze.
Every transaction.
Every credit line.
Every interbank transfer.
Paused.
Not denied.
Not blocked.
Controlled.
Chloe stepped forward.
“What is happening?”
Arthur swallowed.
“She triggered the review clause.”
The fiancé frowned. “Who? That woman?”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Chloe shook her head.
“This is insane. One person can’t freeze an entire conglomerate.”
Arthur finally looked at her directly.
“You’re still thinking like this is a company.”
A pause.
“This is a structure.”
He turned the phone toward her.
On the screen was a document header:
LAWRENCE TRUST GLOBAL EXECUTION FRAMEWORK
Chloe blinked.
“I’ve never seen that.”
Arthur’s voice lowered.
“No one at your level is supposed to.”
Silence.
Then he added:
“Because you’re not at the top of it.”
