Chapter 6 - The New Mistress of Villa Moretti

Three weeks later, the spring sun was warm over the manicured gardens of Villa Moretti.

The dark clouds of betrayal, secret ledgers, and mob wars had completely cleared, replaced by the gentle humming of bees around the lavender bushes and the distant, soothing sound of Lake Como lapping against the stone dock below.

In the center of the estate’s private courtyard, near a white marble fountain carved with dancing nymphs, a small girl in a yellow summer dress was running across the lush green grass.

"Catch me, Mr. Teddy!" Emma giggled, holding her cream-colored bear high above her head as she darted around the edge of the water.

Sitting at a wrought-iron patio table under the shade of a wide white umbrella, I watched her with a smile that felt lighter, freer, than anything I had experienced in years.

I was no longer wearing the rough denim apron or the plain black dress of a housekeeper. Instead, I wore a simple, elegant cream silk dress that Alessandro had gifted me, my hair styled softly around my shoulders.

A footstep sounded behind me on the stone pavers.

Alessandro stepped out from the French doors of the main house, carrying two glasses of iced peach tea. He had discarded his formal tie, his collar open at the neck, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome in the afternoon light.

He set one glass down in front of me and took the chair beside mine, his dark eyes drifting out toward Emma, who was now attempting to teach the cream-colored bear how to dance on the grass.

"She looks happy," Alessandro said softly.

"She is," I replied, looking at him, a warm flush rising to my cheeks. "We both are. I still... I still can't believe this is real, Alessandro. Three weeks ago, I was scrubbing your corridors."

"Three weeks ago," Alessandro said, reaching across the table and taking my hand in his, his large, warm fingers weaving gently through mine, "I was a man living in a house of stone, surrounded by traitors and ghosts."

He squeezed my hand gently.

"You and your daughter didn't just bring that bear into this house, Clara," he whispered, looking directly into my eyes with an intensity that made my heart race. "You brought light into a place that hadn't seen it in ten years."

I looked down at our joined hands, feeling the strength and protection radiating from him. "People are talking, you know. The crime families... the servants. They say it's crazy for the Don of Milan to marry a former housekeeper."

"Let them talk," Alessandro said with a soft, confident smile. "The families respect strength, dignity, and loyalty. You showed more courage standing up to Vivian in that corridor than half the dons in that ballroom ever have in their entire lives."

He stood up, keeping his hand held out to me.

"Come here," he said softly.

I stood up and took his hand, letting him lead me down the steps onto the soft green lawn.

Emma saw us coming and let out a squeal of joy, running over and throwing her small arms around Alessandro’s leg.

"Don Alessandro!" she cheered, looking up at him with wide, idolizing eyes. "Look! Mr. Teddy got his ear fixed! The gold thread looks like a little crown!"

Alessandro laughed—a deep, rich sound that seemed to fill the entire garden with warmth—and knelt down on the grass, lifting Emma easily onto his shoulder with one arm while wrapping his other arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side.

"It is a crown, little one," Alessandro said, looking up at her with a gentle grin. "Because from today on... this is your home. And nobody in this city will ever make your mother cry again."

Emma clapped her hands together, holding the cream-colored bear high into the bright spring sunshine.

I leaned my head against Alessandro’s shoulder, smelling the clean scent of cedar and rain on his skin, watching the sunlight sparkle across the clear blue waters of the lake.

The pain of the past was gone. The widow's grief, the poverty, the insults—all of it had burned away in the storm, leaving behind a foundation built not on fear or criminal ledgers, but on love, protection, and a family that had finally found its home.
