Chapter 5: The Legal Empire

The next morning, the grandest courtroom in downtown Indianapolis was packed to the brim. Cynthia Vance sat at the state's table, looking confident. Garrison Bell sat at the defense table, surrounded by the top ten defense attorneys in the country.

Leo sat between them, looking incredibly small in a brand-new, navy-blue suit Garrison had bought him.

"Your Honor," Cynthia argued to the judge. "Mr. Bell is a grieving widower who is using his immense wealth to bypass the legal adoption protocol. He has no legal right to this child. Leo belongs in a state facility until a proper foster family can be vetted."

The judge looked over his glasses at Garrison. "Mr. Bell, what do you have to say for yourself? Wealth does not make you above the law."

Garrison stood up. He didn't look at the judge; he looked at the press gallery, where dozens of cameras were live-streaming the event to millions of people on social media.

"I am not asking to bypass the law, Your Honor," Garrison said, his voice calm, steady, and entirely dominant. "I am executing it. Yesterday evening, my legal team established the Noah & Leo Lifeline Foundation, a fifty-million-dollar medical trust dedicated to training paramedic youth in under-served communities. Leo has been appointed the honorary student chair."

The courtroom murmured in surprise.

"But more importantly," Garrison continued, pulling a document from his jacket. "I have here a verified adult adoption petition, along with a full background check and psychological evaluation. But I don't want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the person who matters."

Garrison looked down at Leo, placing a warm hand on the boy's shoulder. "Go ahead, son."

Leo stood up, his knees trembling, but he looked the judge straight in the eye. "When I was on the streets, nobody looked at me. People walked past me like I was trash. But when Mr. Bell's baby stopped breathing, I didn't see a billionaire. I saw a dad who loved his kid. And when Mr. Bell came into the rain to find me, he didn't see a homeless boy. He saw a son. I don't want to go back to the dark under the bridge, Your Honor. I want to be a brother to Noah. I want to be a Bell."

The courtroom fell into a stunned, emotional silence. The judge looked at the documents, then at Cynthia Vance, whose face had gone completely pale as she realized the public backlash she was about to face.

The judge slammed his gavel down. "Application for immediate temporary custody and adoption fast-track is granted to Garrison Bell. Case closed."
