Chapter 4: The Traitor Within

The betrayal stung worse than the realization that we were being hunted.
Someone on my executive floor—someone I trusted with my life, my secrets, and my empire—was working with the people who had taken Elena. My mind instantly flashed to Victoria. She had been desperate to get the boys out of the building. She had tried to stop the DNA test. Was she trying to protect the company, or was she trying to cover her tracks?
“Aris, wipe the server,” I ordered quietly. “Don’t let anyone else access those files. And go into hiding for a few days. If they hacked you, you aren’t safe.”
“Understood, Alex. Be careful.”
I hung up and stared out at the twinkling lights of the Manhattan skyline. I felt completely isolated. The billions of dollars I had amassed couldn’t buy me certainty, and my high-tech empire felt like a glass castle waiting to shatter.
I spent the next two hours utilizing my own private, encrypted software to trace the hack. I am a programmer at heart; I built Sterling Industries from lines of code. No matter how clever the hacker was, they left a digital footprint.
As the progress bar on my screen reached 100%, the source location materialized. The hack hadn’t just come from the executive floor. It had been initiated using a master security keycard assigned directly to Victoria Vance.
A cold, dangerous calm washed over me.
Before I could call a private security detail to have her apprehended, my laptop screen suddenly flickered. The webcam light turned a solid, eerie green.
The screen changed to show a live video feed. It was a dark, industrial warehouse. Sitting in a wooden chair, tied up but alive, was Elena. Her face was bruised, her hair matted, but her eyes held the same fiery defiance I remembered.
Standing behind her was a man in a tailored suit, his face obscured by the shadows. But it wasn’t Victoria. It was a voice I recognized instantly—a voice from my board of directors.
Charles Montgomery. My mentor. The man who had helped me build Sterling Industries after my accident.
“You always were too smart for your own good, Alex,” Charles’s voice echoed through my laptop speakers.
“Charles,” I spat, my fists clenching. “Why?”
“Why? Because you built a multi-billion-dollar family empire based on the tragic narrative of a lonely, childless billionaire,” Charles chuckled darkly. “The public loves a tragic genius. The investors love it. The upcoming merger relies entirely on your clean, predictable image. If it gets out that you hid two secret heirs, that you abandoned a woman, the scandal will tank the stock. I lose half my net worth.”
“I didn’t know about them!” I shouted.
“It doesn’t matter what the truth is, Alex. It matters what the public perceives,” Charles said coldly. “Victoria was smart enough to see the risk. She came to me the moment the boys walked into the lobby. She’s been very helpful in tracking your little detour tonight.”
My heart stopped. Tracking?
I looked toward the bedroom where my sons were sleeping.
“You see, Alex, you used your master corporate credit card to pay the toll on the Williamsburg Bridge,” Charles mocked. “You’re brilliant with tech, but you’re emotional now. And emotional men make mistakes.”
Outside the penthouse, the distinct, rhythmic thud of a helicopter began to vibrate through the glass windows.
“Here’s the deal, Alex,” Charles said, gesturing to Elena. “You sign over your voting shares of Sterling Industries to me tonight. You step down as CEO, citing health reasons. If you do, I let Elena live, and I ensure you and your boys get a nice, quiet retirement somewhere far away from New York. If you refuse... well, New York is a dangerous place. Tragedies happen every day.”

The video feed abruptly cut to black.
The helicopter was directly above the building now. Heavy footsteps echoed on the rooftop terrace outside. They were coming for my children.
