Chapter 2 - The Sealed Letter

The paper felt like ice against my fingertips.
I stared at the looping, elegant cursive. For Alexander Only. It was Elena. Elena Vance. The woman who had loved me before I had a billion-dollar empire, before the corporate towers, and long before the horrific car crash that had rewritten my medical future. Seven years ago, right around the time the doctors were telling me my body was broken, Elena had vanished without a trace, leaving behind an empty apartment and a hole in my chest I had spent nearly a decade trying to bury under work.
"Daddy?" Lucas asked, his small hand reaching out to gently touch the lapel of my tailored suit jacket. "Are you sad?"
"No, buddy," I choked out, my voice raspy, a far cry from the commanding tone I used in the boardroom. I carefully folded the envelope and slipped it into the inside pocket of my coat, right over my pounding heart. "I'm just... very surprised."
I stood up, keeping a firm grip on both of their small hands. The silence in the lobby of Sterling Tower was deafening. Dozens of my employees were still frozen at their desks, their eyes wide, completely captivated by the unfolding drama.
"Margaret," I called out, my voice cutting through the stagnation.
Margaret stepped forward instantly, her professional composure barely holding together. "Yes, Mr. Sterling?"
"Clear my schedule for the rest of the day. Cancel the board meeting with the European investors. Cancel everything." I looked down at the twins, who were looking around the massive, glass-ceilinged lobby with wide, innocent eyes. "And have the executive kitchen send up some hot chocolate and cookies to the penthouse suite. Chocolate chip."
"Right away, sir," Margaret murmured, a soft, genuinely emotional smile breaking across her face.
As I led Lucas and Noah toward the private VIP elevator, the security detail formed an impenetrable wall behind us, blocking the whispers of the crowd. The heavy glass doors slid shut, and as the elevator shot up toward the 50th floor, I leaned against the mirrored wall, my hand trembling inside my pocket, gripping the letter.
I didn't open it until the boys were safely settled on the plush leather sofa in my private office, happily munching on cookies and pointing out the window at the tiny yellow taxi cabs buzzing far below in the Manhattan streets.
I stepped into the adjacent private conference room, closed the heavy frosted glass door, and tore open the envelope.
Dearest Alex,
If you are reading this, it means Lucas and Noah have found you. I knew they would. They have your stubbornness, Alex. They have your map-reading skills, too.
I know you are confused. I know you are remembering what the doctors told you after the accident. But there is a secret I had to keep to protect them—and to protect you. Seven years ago, right before I disappeared, I discovered I was pregnant. I was terrified, excited, and driving to your apartment to tell you when I saw the news broadcast of your crash on the highway.
I rushed to the hospital, but your mother and your stepfather, Richard, blocked me at the door. Richard told me that if I ever tried to contact you again, he would cut off your medical funding, ruin your recovery, and ensure you never inherited a dime of the Sterling estate. He called my pregnancy a 'bastard extortion plot.'
I left to save you, Alex. I raised our boys in a quiet town in upstate New York, hiding from your family's shadow. But three weeks ago, I was diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer. I am running out of time. I cannot leave our sons to the foster system, and I cannot let Richard find them first. They are your blood, Alex. They are your miracle. Please... protect them from the monsters in your world.
With all my love, always, Elena.
The paper slipped from my fingers, drifting onto the glass table.
A cold, unadulterated fury ignited in my veins, burning away the shock. Richard. My stepfather. The man who had taken over my late father’s firm while I was in a coma, the man who had constantly reminded me that a "broken man" shouldn't control a billion-dollar legacy. He hadn't just stolen years of my life—he had stolen my children. He had lied to me, used his medical connections to manipulate my charts, and forced the woman I loved into hiding while she fought for her life.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the executive suite burst open.
"Alexander!" a booming, arrogant voice echoed through the hallway.
It was Richard. He was flanked by three corporate attorneys, his face flushed with rage as he marched straight toward my office. He had clearly heard about the lobby incident from a corporate spy.
"What is the meaning of this circus downstairs?!" Richard roared, pushing past Margaret. "Two street rats running into my lobby claiming to be your sons? Have you lost your mind? Security should have thrown them into the Hudson River!"
I pushed open the frosted glass door, stepping into the hallway. The coldness in my eyes made Richard stop dead in his tracks.
"Step away from my office, Richard," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register that made the attorneys behind him visibly flinch.

"Don't give me orders in this building, Alex!" Richard sneered, taking a step forward, his expensive gold watch glinting under the lights. "You are a childless cripple who got lucky with a few software apps. If the board hears you’re entertaining a cheap extortion scam from some old mistress, they will vote to remove you as CEO by noon tomorrow!"
"They won't vote for anything, Richard," I whispered, pulling the letter from my pocket and holding it up. "Because the scam is over. And your execution has just begun."
