Chapter 3 - The First Breach

The next three days at the Fort Sheridan estate passed in a deceptive, fragile peace. Under the constant care of Major Davies and the protective shield of her father, Emilyâs physical condition began to improve. The color returned to her cheeks, and she was finally able to sit up in bed, eating small meals while looking out at the lake.
But the silence inside her remained heavy.
On the fourth afternoon, James sat beside her bed, peeling an orange for her just as he used to do when she was a little girl growing up on various military bases across the country.
"You don't have to talk about it yet, Emmy," James said softly, setting a slice of orange on a porcelain plate. "The lawyers are handling the divorce filings. The federal marshals are building the case against Linda's clinic. They won't ever touch you again."
Emily looked down at her swollen belly, her fingers gently tracing the fabric of the soft yellow sweater her father had bought her. "I was so ashamed, Dad," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Ryan was sweet at first. But when the debt got bad, he changed. He blamed me for the money we didn't have. And Linda... she kept telling me that if I told you, youâd use your military power to destroy his life, and then my baby would grow up with a father in prison. She made me feel like I was the one destroying the family."
James reached out, his broad, calloused hand cupping her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Listen to me, Emily. The only people who destroyed anything are the monsters who put their hands on a pregnant woman. You did not fail. You survived. And your mother... she would be so incredibly proud of how strong youâve been."
Before Emily could answer, the sharp, rhythmic beep of Jamesâs tactical secure phone shattered the quiet of the room.
James answered it instantly, his voice immediately dropping into his operational register. "Bennett."
"Colonel, weâve got an anomaly at the West Gate," Master Sergeant Vanceâs voice echoed sharply through the line. "A commercial delivery truck just bypassed the first security barrier. The driver ignored the commands to halt. The gate guards deployed the tire shreds, but the vehicle is still moving on rims toward the residential sector."
James stood up, his posture instantly aligning into a combat stance. "Identify the vehicle."
"Itâs a cloned municipal maintenance van, Sir. But our thermal imaging just picked up four occupants in the backâheavily armed. Thomas Coleâs private security firm isn't helping Ryan escape, Colonel. Theyâre launching a counter-extraction. Ryan must have told them about the inheritance bonds locked in your private safe here."
"Lock down the master suite, Marcus. Activate the perimeter defense. I am coming down."
James turned to Emily, his eyes filled with an absolute, comforting certainty. "Stay in this room, Emily. Lock the door from the inside. Major Davies is right outside. Nobody is getting through this hallway."

"Dad, please be careful," she gasped, her hands clutching her belly.
James offered a short, dangerous smile as he reached into the nightstand, pulling out a sleek, customized M9 service pistol. "Emmy, they brought a knife to a gunfight. And they forgot I command the entire brigade."
