Chapter 5: Power Play

At 8:00 AM the following morning, a live press conference was called at the Whitaker Tower headquarters. The media room was packed with hundreds of reporters, cameras flashing like a thunderstorm.
Eleanor Hartwell sat at the center of the panel, looking smug and victorious in her pearls. "Thank you all for coming," she announced into the microphone. "As the matriarch of the Hartwell family, it is my duty to protect our legacy from fraudulent claims. We are prepared to fight any false paternity actions in court—"
Suddenly, the heavy doors at the back of the auditorium swung open.
Julian walked in. But he wasn't alone.
He was pushing a stroller. And beside him walked me. I held my head high, wearing the same cream blouse and navy coat, refusing to let these people see me hide.
The press went wild, cameras pivoting instantly toward us. Eleanor’s smile vanished, her face twisting into a mask of horror as Julian walked right up to the stage, lifting Rose into his arms. He stepped up to the main microphone, completely bypassing his mother.
"Good morning," Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "I have a brief statement. My mother’s claims are entirely false, unauthorized, and driven by personal malice."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out the legal DNA certificate, holding it up clearly for every camera to broadcast to the world.
"This is the official DNA report. Rose Hartwell is my legal, biological daughter and the sole primary heir to the Hartwell fortune," Julian declared proudly. "Furthermore, effective immediately, I am filing a defamation lawsuit against Eleanor Hartwell for her malicious statements against my daughter and my wife."
The room erupted into chaos. Reporters shouted questions, flashing lights blinding the stage. Eleanor stood up, trembling with rage. "Julian! You are destroying this family for that... that girl!"
"No, Mother," Julian said, looking at her with cold finality. "You destroyed this family a year ago when you hid my wife's calls. Security, escort her out of my building."

As the guards led a screaming Eleanor away, Julian turned to the cameras. "One last thing. I am stepping down as active CEO of Whitaker Industries. I am appointing a trusted board member to take over daily operations. I have spent too many years building an empire of concrete. It's time I spent my life building a home for the people I love."
He turned to me, holding Rose between us, his eyes pleading for forgiveness.
