Chapter 4 - The Pier 4 Trap

Thursday night arrived under a heavy deluge of spring rain that turned the Boston skyline into a blurred smear of gray and yellow lights.

Pier 4 smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and rotting fish. Behind an abandoned lobster processing plant sat an unmarked steel door guarded by two massive men in heavy raincoats. Inside was The Anchor—an underground, illegal high-rollers casino frequented by corrupt judges, crooked union leaders, and high-ranking members of the Scalisi crime family.

At 11:30 PM, a sleek silver Audi pulled into the muddy parking lot behind the pier.

Judge Richard Vance—a bloated, red-faced man in his late fifties wearing a drenched camel-hair coat—stepped out, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. He was visibly sweating despite the chilly rain. He had lost two hundred thousand dollars the previous week, and tonight, he was playing with money he had stolen from a municipal pension fund.

He hurried toward the steel door, nodded to the guards, and slipped inside.

He didn't notice the black Mercedes van parked fifty yards away in the shadows of a shipping container.

Inside the van, illuminated by the green glow of tactical monitors, sat Dominic, Marco, and Hannah.

Hannah wore a sleek, dark green silk dress that draped over her curves with breathtaking elegance, paired with a heavy black trench coat. Her dark hair was pinned up, revealing the long, pale line of her throat.

Dominic couldn't stop looking at her. For three days, he had watched her work alongside his intelligence team, coordinating financial records, cross-referencing bank routing numbers, and analyzing court transcripts with the cold, surgical precision of a trauma surgeon. She wasn't just smart—she was brilliant under pressure.

"Are you sure about this, Hannah?" Dominic asked, his hand hovering near hers on the padded bench seat. "Once you walk through those doors with Marco, there’s no turning back. If Scalisi’s men recognize you—"

"They won't," Hannah said, checking her compact mirror and applying a swipe of deep crimson lipstick. "To Scalisi’s men, I’m just an expensive escort accompanying a high-rolling property developer from Miami."

She looked at Dominic, her dark eyes sharp and steady. "Just make sure your federal contacts are in position."

"Special Agent Miller is waiting on the secondary line," Dominic assured her, his voice dropping an octave. "The FBI has been trying to catch Vance with his hands in the pension fund for three years. When you transmit the live audio of him offering state judgeships to settle his gambling debt, Miller will execute the warrant within sixty seconds."

Dominic reached out, his long fingers gently catching Hannah’s chin. His thumb brushed softly over her lower lip, his touch surprisingly warm, surprisingly tender for a man whose hands commanded an army of killers.

"Be careful, Hannah," Dominic murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, possessive intensity that made her breath catch in her throat. "If anything happens to you inside that room... I’ll burn Pier 4 to the waterline."

Hannah felt a strange, thrilling warmth bloom in her chest. "Is that Moretti family policy?"

"No," Dominic whispered, leaning in until his lips were inches from hers. "That’s my policy."

Hannah pulled back gently, giving him a small, confident smile that made his heart hit his ribs like a sledgehammer. "Save the drama for after we win, Mr. Moretti."

Five minutes later, Hannah walked into The Anchor leaning heavily on Marco’s arm. Marco was dressed as a wealthy, ostentatious offshore investor—complete with a gold Rolex, a silk shirt, and an air of absolute arrogance.

The casino was thick with cigar smoke and the clatter of roulette wheels. In the back corner, sitting at a private high-stakes blackjack table, was Judge Richard Vance, clutching a glass of scotch with trembling fingers.

Hannah walked smoothly toward the bar directly behind Vance’s table. She sat down, ordered a martini, and reached into her designer clutch bag. She pulled out a small, silver lipstick tube—which was actually a high-frequency, encrypted wireless transmitter engineered by Dominic's tech team—and set it casually on the marble bar top next to Vance's shoulder.

"...I'm telling you, Sal," Vance’s slurred, desperate voice was captured clearly by the microphone, transmitting instantly to the FBI van outside. "Give me another hundred grand on credit! I have the ruling on the waterfront development coming up next Tuesday! I can rule in Scalisi's favor! I can wipe out the Moretti shipping permits with a single stroke of my pen!"

"You're already down three hundred grand, Judge," Sal Rizzoli’s voice boomed from across the blackjack table. Sal’s wrist was wrapped in a thick white cast from his encounter with Dominic three nights ago. "Mr. Scalisi wants collateral. Real collateral."

"I'll give you the judicial appointment for the Second District!" Vance pleaded, leaning across the felt table, his eyes bloodshot. "I can fix the jury selection for your nephew's extortion trial! Just deal the cards!"

In the Mercedes van outside, Special Agent Miller pressed a button on his console. "We have clear admissions of bribery, judicial corruption, and racketeering. All units... move in!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of The Anchor were kicked open with a deafening CRASH.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS ON THE TABLES!"

Chaos erupted. Screaming men threw stacks of poker chips into the air. Guards reached for weapons, only to be tackled by tactical officers in heavy body armor.

In the middle of the panic, Sal Rizzoli’s eyes darted toward the bar. He saw Hannah sitting calmly, taking a slow sip of her martini, picking up the silver lipstick tube and slipping it into her bag.

Sal’s face contorted into pure, murderous rage. "YOU!" he roared, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket pocket with his left hand. "YOU SET US UP!"

Sal raised the gun, aiming directly at Hannah’s chest.

Hannah didn't flinch. She picked up a heavy, glass ice bucket from the bar counter and slammed it with all her strength directly into Sal’s face just as he pulled the trigger.

BANG!

The shot went wild, shattering a mirror behind the bar. Sal stumbled backward, blood pouring from his nose, falling heavily onto the blackjack table.

Before Sal could recover, Dominic Moretti stepped out of the fog at the doorway, flanked by four tactical FBI officers. Dominic walked through the chaotic room like a king inspecting a battlefield, ignoring the yelling agents and sprawling suspects, his eyes fixed entirely on Hannah.

He reached the bar in three long strides, grabbed Hannah by her waist, and lifted her completely off her feet, pulling her tight against his chest.

"Are you hit?" Dominic demanded frantically, his hands sweeping over her arms, her shoulders, her back. "Hannah! Talk to me!"

"I'm fine, Dominic," Hannah panted, her arms wrapping instinctively around his heavy neck, resting her forehead against his jaw. "I told you... I had it under control."

Dominic let out a deep, shuddering breath, burying his face in the crook of her neck, smelling the vanilla perfume and the crisp salt air. "You're insane, Dr. Brooks. Absolutely, terrifyingly insane."

"And you," Hannah whispered, pulling back to look into his blazing ocean-blue eyes, "are remarkably late for a bodyguard."

Dominic didn't answer with words. He grabbed the back of her head and kissed her—a deep, fierce, hungry kiss that blew right through five years of isolation, fear, and quiet rage, leaving them both breathless in the middle of a federal raid.
