Chapter 6 - The Long Way Home

Six months later.

The quiet coastal town of Cape May, New Jersey, was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a late spring sunset.

A quarter-mile from the gentle surf of the Atlantic stood a white, two-story Victorian house with a wraparound porch, a wide garden full of blooming hydrangeas, and a blue front door.

Sitting on the porch steps, wearing a simple linen shirt and dark trousers, was Aleandro Moretti.

He looked different. The cold, lethal edge that had defined his face for twenty years had softened into something calm and weathered. A thin scar ran down his left shoulder, and a medical port was discreetly hidden beneath his shirt—a reminder of the successful heart surgery he had undergone three months after dismantling his criminal organization.

He was no longer a mob boss. He was a retired man, his legal holdings liquidated and placed into a secure educational trust for underprivileged children across New York.

The screen door opened, and Sarah walked out carrying a tray with two glasses of lemonade and a plate of fresh strawberries.

She wore a yellow summer dress, her long brown hair tied back in a loose ponytail. She sat down beside Aleandro on the porch step, setting the tray down, and rested her head gently against his shoulder.

"The doctor called from Manhattan," Sarah said softly, watching the seagulls circle above the ocean. "He said your stress levels are down fifty percent. He called it a medical miracle."

Aleandro smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her close. "It’s not a miracle, Sarah. It’s peace."

They looked out across the manicured front lawn.

Lily, wearing a bright yellow coat instead of her old red one, was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Vincent Russo—now living in a small cottage down the street as their estate manager—had bought her for her fourth birthday.

"Look, Daddy! Look how fast Max runs!" Lily cheered, her laughter ringing out across the quiet yard like silver bells.

"He’s fast, sweetie!" Aleandro called back, his voice full, warm, and resonant. "But not faster than you!"

Lily ran up the wooden porch steps, her white sneakers clicking against the timber. She stopped in front of Aleandro, holding up a small piece of paper.

It was a crayon drawing.

In the center was a small white house with a blue door. Standing beside the house were three figures: a woman with long brown hair, a small girl with brown curls, and a tall man with short dark hair, warm brown eyes, and a wide, happy smile.

And beneath the tall man, written in shaky, proud crayon letters, was his full name:

DADDY.

Aleandro took the drawing with gentle, reverent fingers, looking at the face she had finally given him.

"You drew my face," Aleandro whispered, his heart swelling with a joy so profound it made his breath catch.

Lily climbed onto his lap, curling her legs up, and wrapped her small arms around his neck. She rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his mended heart.

"You don't need to be a ghost anymore, Daddy," Lily whispered softly, taking his large right hand in both of her tiny ones. "Because you came home."

Aleandro looked at Sarah, who smiled through happy tears, and then down at his daughter. He held her tight against his chest as the ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and summer across the porch, knowing that no matter what storms lay behind them, he would never let go of her hand again.
