Chapter 4 - The Clean Slate

With Arthur gone, the garden fell into a quiet, tentative peace. The gardener and the housekeeper, who had witnessed everything, stood at the edge of the lawn, their eyes wide, waiting for the sky to fall.

Isabella walked slowly over to Samuel. She knelt down on the wet grass, her knees staining the silk of her faded dress, and looked at his small toy car.

"May I see it?" she asked softly.

Samuel smiled, handing her the red plastic car. "It’s fast. But one of the wheels is stuck. Mom says we can fix it when we get our next check."

"I can fix it for you," Isabella whispered, a genuine smile finally breaking through the sadness on her face. She looked up at me, her eyes wet with tears. "Thank you, Emma. Thank you for raising a boy who still knows how to look for the people hiding in the dark."

Thiago wheeled himself closer to us. He looked at his sister, his hands resting on his lap. "Isabella... I will sign the papers today. I will return every single share, every port, every dollar to your name. I will turn myself in to the authorities for what I did."

"No, Thiago," Isabella said, standing up and placing a hand on his shoulder. "If you go to prison, the clinics will never be built. The company will dissolve, and thousands of families who depend on our shipping yards will lose their livelihoods. We are going to fix this, but we are going to do it together. No more lies."

Thiago looked at Samuel. "And you, young man. I offered you everything I owned, and you told me you didn't want it. Why?"

Samuel looked at the grand mansion, then at the dirty, worn sneakers on his feet. "My mom says that when you take things you didn't earn, you have to carry the weight of how you got them. I just wanted you to be happy, Uncle Thiago."

The billionaire let out a soft, wet laugh, wiping a tear from his eye. "You are wiser than any man I've ever met in a boardroom, Samuel."
