CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO LOOKED TOO NERVOUS

Victor crossed the room quickly.

Too quickly.

His smile looked forced.

Artificial.

"Mother, you're upset."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"No."

She never looked away from him.

"I'm finally paying attention."

A strange silence settled between them.

The waitress noticed it immediately.

Something wasn't right.

Victor looked at the necklace.

Then at the girl.

Then away.

Almost nervously.

Eleanor saw it too.

And suddenly memories began resurfacing.

Twenty years ago.

The accident.

The closed casket.

The rushed investigation.

The missing police reports.

The insurance claims.

And one detail she had ignored for years.

Victor had been the first person to arrive at the crash scene.

Her voice dropped.

"Where were you that night?"

Victor froze.

The room became silent again.

"What?"

"The accident."

Eleanor stepped closer.

"You arrived before the police."

Victor laughed awkwardly.

"Mother, that was twenty years ago."

"Answer me."

The command echoed through the ballroom.

Victor's forehead glistened with sweat.

The waitress felt sick.

Because she suddenly realized something.

Victor wasn't acting like a concerned uncle.

He was acting like a suspect.

A family attorney stepped forward.

"Eleanor..."

But she raised her hand.

"No."

Her eyes remained locked on Victor.

Then she noticed something else.

Something she had never questioned before.

The necklace.

Only three identical necklaces had ever existed.

One for Eleanor.

One for Anna.

And one...

For Victor.

The room seemed to tilt.

Eleanor's face slowly drained of color.

Because if the waitress possessed Anna's necklace...

And Eleanor still possessed hers...

Then Victor's necklace should still exist.

Unless...

Her gaze dropped to his neck.

The chain he always wore was gone.

For the first time in twenty years.

Gone.

Victor realized she'd noticed.

And panic flashed across his face.

Real panic.

Not grief.

Not surprise.

Fear.

The kind people feel when secrets begin crawling into daylight.

Eleanor whispered one sentence.

"Tell me what you did."

Victor stepped backward.

And everyone in the room suddenly understood.

Something terrible had happened twenty years ago.

And Victor knew exactly what it was.
