Chapter 5 - The Avalanche Begins

The board meeting of Lincoln Memorial Hospital was held in the executive conference room on the top floor—a room with leather chairs, a mahogany table, and a panoramic view of the city.

Vivien Ashworth Pell sat at the head of the table, her husband Andrew beside her. The board members, a dozen wealthy men and women in tailored suits, sat in quiet deference, waiting for the meeting to begin.

"Thank you all for coming," Vivien said, her voice smooth and authoritative. "We have a historic day ahead of us. With the Pell Foundation’s fifteen million dollar commitment, we are ready to move forward with the groundbreaking for the new pediatric wing. However, before we sign the final papers, we must resolve the outstanding administrative matter regarding Dr. Sloan Sterling."

She gestured to the folder in front of her. "As you know, Dr. Sterling’s recent conduct has raised serious questions about her suitability for leadership. Her unauthorized presence at the charity gala, combined with her inappropriate interactions with a vulnerable child, has created a liability we cannot ignore. The Pell Foundation strongly recommends her immediate termination."

"I wouldn't sign those papers just yet, Vivien."

The door to the conference room swung open, and Daniel Rock walked in.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his hair neat, his expression cold and unreadable. Behind him walked Sloan, looking calm and professional in a dark grey suit, her hands folded in front of her.

And beside Sloan, holding her hand, was Lily.

Vivien’s eyes narrowed. "Daniel. This is a closed board meeting. And really, bringing Lily here is highly inappropriate."

"Lily has a right to be here, Vivien," Daniel said, taking a seat at the table. He pulled out a chair for Sloan, and Lily sat on a small stool beside her, her mother-of-pearl comb gleaming in the fluorescent light. "After all, she is the primary witness to the 'incident' you’ve used to justify Dr. Sterling's termination."

"Daniel, please," Andrew Pell said, interjecting. "This is a simple HR matter. We don't need to drag your family into this."

"It's not an HR matter, Andrew. It’s a fraud," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a sleek, silver tablet, sliding it onto the center of the mahogany table. "And I have the evidence to prove it."

He tapped the screen, and a video began to play.

It was security footage from the Lumis Hotel gala, but it wasn't the edited, blurred footage the hospital's PR team had been given. It was the raw, high-definition feed from the ballroom's main security camera, which Daniel's tech company had successfully retrieved from the hotel’s servers.

The video showed the table clearly. It showed Lily sitting alone, ignored by the crowd. It showed the photographer angling his lens to blur her out. It showed Vivien Pell passing her by without a glance.

And then it showed Sloan.

It showed her walking over, crouching down to Lily’s level, and signing. It showed the genuine, radiant smile on Lily's face. It showed them sharing the grapes. And finally, it showed Vivien Pell arriving with security, her face tight with anger, forcing Dr. Sterling to leave.

The board members watched the screen in stunned silence.

"This video shows no harassment, Vivien," Daniel said, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "It shows a dedicated pediatrician doing what everyone else in that room failed to do—treating a deaf child with dignity and respect. It shows Dr. Sterling bridging a gap that my own company's millions couldn't bridge."

"This is security footage, Daniel," Vivien scoffed, though her face had gone slightly pale. "It has no context. It doesn't prove—"

"I think the public will find the context quite clear, Vivien," Daniel interrupted. He tapped the screen again, bringing up a document. "This is a copy of a press release that will be sent to every major news outlet in the state in exactly ten minutes. It details the Pell Foundation's attempt to blackmail Lincoln Memorial Hospital into firing a world-class pediatric cardiologist because she exposed the hypocrisy of your charity gala."

"You wouldn't dare," Vivien whispered, her eyes flashing with fury. "You would ruin this hospital's reputation. You would stop the funding for the pediatric wing!"

"No," Daniel said, leaning forward. "I won't. Because Rock Enterprises is officially matching the Pell Foundation's fifteen million dollar gift. We are funding the surgical wing entirely on our own."

The board members gasped, several of them sitting up in their chairs.

"On one condition," Daniel continued, looking around the room. "The new wing will not be named after the Pell Foundation. It will be named the Clara Rock Pediatric Center, in honor of my sister. And Dr. Sloan Sterling will be appointed as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology, with full administrative authority over the department."

He looked back at Vivien, his smile cold and triumphant. "If the board accepts my offer, the press release is deleted. If you decline, the story breaks, the Pell Foundation's reputation is ruined, and I withdraw my funding anyway. The choice is yours."

Andrew Pell looked at his wife, his face pale with panic. "Vivien... we can't fight this. The public backlash would destroy the foundation."

Vivien stared at Daniel, her hands shaking as she gripped her program. She knew she had lost. The avalanche had come, and it had completely buried her.

"Meeting adjourned," the board chairman said quickly, standing up. "We accept Mr. Rock’s proposal. Dr. Sterling, congratulations on your appointment."

The board members flooded out of the room, leaving Vivien and Andrew to gather their things in tense, angry silence. As Vivien walked past Daniel, she paused, her eyes venomous.

"You think you’ve won, Daniel," she hissed. "But you’ve made a powerful enemy."

May you like

"I don't care about your power, Vivien," Daniel said, not even looking at her. "I have something much stronger."

He looked down at Lily, who was watching him with a wide, proud smile.
