Chapter 5 - The Bloodlines Broken

For three days, the city burned.

From the concrete basement safehouse beneath the Greenwich mansion, I listened to the muffled echoes of gunfire and sirens in the distance. Leo stayed with me, his laptop open, monitoring the dark web and the encrypted channels of the underworld. The Romano family was clearing house. Every captain, every soldier, and every ally who had signed their name to Marcus Hale’s rebellion was being systematically eliminated.

On the fourth morning, the heavy steel door of the safehouse groaned open.

Alexander stood in the doorway. He looked exhausted, his dark coat stained with soot and dried blood, a deep cut running along his high cheekbone. But his eyes were victorious.

"It's over," he said simply.

Leo stood up, letting out a breath he seemed to have been holding for days. "The Commission?"

"They knelt," Alexander replied, stepping into the room. "Marcus’s father tried to flee to Switzerland with twenty million of our funds. He didn't make it past the airport. The Hale bloodline is officially removed from the syndicate."

Leo nodded, understanding the unspoken finality of those words. He looked at me, then at his brother, and subtly exited the safehouse, closing the door to give us privacy.

The silence between us was heavy, charged with the memory of that feverish night. I stood by the small cot, my hands clasped in front of my white maid’s apron, suddenly feeling acutely aware of the massive distance between a high-society mafia don and a girl who scrubbed his floors.

Alexander walked over to me, his heavy boots echoing on the concrete. He didn't stop until he was standing mere inches away, his shadow completely enveloping me.

"You lied to Marcus," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur.

"I had to," I whispered, looking down at his chest. "If I told him the truth about the pills, he would have killed me on the spot."

"Not about the pills, Nina," Alexander said, his hand reaching out, his fingers gently lifting my chin until my eyes met his. "You told him I wouldn't remember your last name. You told him I saw you as furniture."

My breath hitched.

"Your name is Nina Petrov," Alexander whispered, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my knees weak. "Your father owed three hundred thousand to the Lucchese family, and you took this job to pay off his debt. I bought that debt a year ago, Nina. I cleared it. You haven't been working here for your father's mistakes; you've been working here because I couldn't bear the thought of you leaving my sight."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes. "You... you knew?"

"I've known everything since the day you walked into this house," he murmured, his thumb brushing away my tears. "On my wedding night with my empire, I thought I was alone. But when I was dying, burning in that bed, you were the only one who didn't look at me like a paycheck or a title. You looked at me like a man. And then you said three words I never thought I’d hear in this life."

He leaned down, his lips brushing against my ear, sending a shiver straight down my spine. "Say them again, Nina. Now that I'm awake."

May you like

"I love you, Alexander," I whispered, my voice breaking.

Alexander didn't answer with words. He pulled me into his arms, his mouth capturing mine in a fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of hunger, relief, and an unbreakable promise.
