Chapter 3 - The Tenth Avenue Ledger

The neon sign of The Rusty Anchor buzzed and flickered against the damp, rain-slicked pavement of Tenth Avenue. Inside, the air was thick with the suffocating stench of stale beer, cheap bourbon, and tobacco smoke. Heavy bass from a broken jukebox vibrated through the floorboards, mixing with the rough laughter of men who lived on the margins of the law.

At a corner booth near the back, a heavy-set Russian enforcer named Yuri was leaning over a metal table, counting out a stack of dirty cash while two of his associates stood guard near the restrooms.

The heavy wooden front door of the tavern opened, and a sudden, unnatural hush fell over the room.

It wasn't just the man who walked in; it was the chilling, absolute aura of authority he carried. Alessandro Moretti strode into the dim tavern with the unhesitating, terrifying grace of a predator entering its domain. He wore a custom charcoal overcoat, his white cane tapping rhythmically against the sticky floorboards, and dark sunglasses hiding his sightless eyes.

Directly behind him walked Marco Rossi, his hand resting casually inside his jacket, flanked by four silent, heavily armed capos who fanned out instantly to secure the exits.

Yuri stopped counting the money. His face drained of color as he recognized the legendary syndicate boss. Everyone in the New York underworld knew who Alessandro Moretti was, and everyone knew that when the devil himself walked into your bar, you didn't live to tell the story.

"M-Mr. Moretti," Yuri stammered, scrambling out of the booth and knocking his chair over backward with a sharp crash. "I... we didn't know you were visiting this side of town. Can we get you a drink? A private room?"

Alessandro stopped three feet from the table. He didn't smile. He didn't speak immediately. He simply stood there, listening to the terrified, shallow breathing of the Russian thugs.

"Yuri," Alessandro said, his voice smooth, low, and laced with absolute poison. "You've been busy lately."

"I... I just run a few small loans, sir! Nothing that interferes with Moretti territory!" Yuri lied, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

"Is that right?" Alessandro tilted his head. "Because my sources tell me you've been shaking down a woman named Elena Vance. Demanding ten thousand dollars you know she doesn't have, threatening to take her home, threatening her child."

Yuri swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward Marco for any sign of mercy. "She owes the money! A debt is a debt, Mr. Moretti! Even in your family, a contract is sacred!"

"A contract is sacred," Alessandro repeated softly. "When it's built on honest terms. But usury, extortion of widows, and terrorizing children in my city?"

Alessandro raised his right hand, snapping his fingers once.

In a fraction of a second, Marco crossed the distance, grabbed Yuri by the collar of his shirt, and slammed him face-first onto the metal table, pressing the barrel of a silenced pistol against the back of his skull. The two Russian guards reached for their waistbands, but four Moretti capos had their weapons leveled at their chests before their hands even cleared leather.

"Please! Don't shoot!" Yuri shrieked, pinning his palms flat against the table.

Alessandro stepped forward, leaning down until his face was inches from Yuri's sweating ear.

"Here is how this transaction is going to work, Yuri," Alessandro whispered, his voice like ice sliding over glass. "You are going to take every single ledger, receipt, and contract bearing Elena Vance's name, and you are going to burn them right now in that ashtray."

"Y-yes! Done! Anything!" Yuri gasped.

"And secondly," Alessandro continued, his voice dropping another octave, "you and your little crew are going to pack your bags tonight, catch a one-way flight back to Moscow, and never, ever set foot in the five boroughs of New York again. If I hear your name whispered in this city tomorrow, Marco won't use a silencer next time."

"We're leaving! We're gone! I swear to God!" Yuri sobbed.

Marco yanked Yuri up by the collar, tossing him aside like a broken doll. One of the Russian thugs scrambled to grab a small leather ledger from the shelf, throwing it onto the table. Marco picked it up, flipped to Elena Vance's page, ripped it out, and held it out to Alessandro.

Though he couldn't see it, Alessandro could smell the old paper and ink. He reached out, took the page, and held it over a lit candle on the nearby table until the flames consumed it entirely, watching the glowing embers turn to ash in the dim light.

"It's finished," Alessandro said, turning on his heel. "Let's go, Marco."

As they walked out into the cool Manhattan night, Marco looked sideways at his boss, shaking his head in quiet disbelief. "You just declared war on the Bratva over a cleaning woman you met in a park, Boss."

"I didn't declare war, Marco," Alessandro replied coldly as he slid into the waiting back of the Cadillac. "I just reminded them who owns the streets."
