Chapter 8 - The Playground Gambit

The Upper East Side Academy was a historic brick structure surrounded by a high wrought-iron fence and a manicured courtyard. It was three o'clock in the afternoon, the sky overcast with a heavy, grey blanket of clouds that threatened another downpour. Parents in luxury SUVs and private nannies were already lining up along the curb, waiting for the dismissal bell.

Alex's SUV tore around the corner, mounting the sidewalk and screeching to a halt right in front of the main gates. He and Julian scrambled out of the vehicle, their eyes immediately scanning the crowded street.

"Where's the van?" Alex asked, his pulse exploding in his ears.

Julian pulled up a tactical scanner on his phone, linked to the school's local cellular tower. "We’ve got a high-density data signal coming from a white utility van parked in the blind spot behind the gymnasium. Three occupants. Their cellular signatures are registered to burner accounts associated with Victor’s old crew."

"We can't storm the van with this many children around," Alex said, looking at the dozens of toddlers and elementary students who were just beginning to stream out of the heavy oak doors of the school. "If a shootout breaks out here, it’ll be a massacre."

"Then we intercept the boys before they reach the courtyard," Julian said, checking his sidearm beneath his coat. "Come on."

They navigated through the crowd of parents, their imposing figures cutting a path toward the lower-grade exit. The dismissal bell suddenly rang, its shrill, metallic clang echoing through the courtyard like an alarm.

Dozens of children in matching private school uniforms poured into the open air, laughing, shouting, and running toward their parents. Alex’s eyes scanned the sea of small faces, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Then, he spotted them.

Lucas and Noah were walking out of the side exit near the gymnasium, their small backpacks slung over their shoulders. Noah was holding a half-eaten apple, talking animatedly with a teacher, while Lucas walked beside him, his watchful blue eyes scanning the crowd with that habitual Sterling caution.

But behind them, stepping out from the shadows of the gym wall, were two tall men in heavy dark jackets. One of them had his hand buried deep in his pocket, his gaze locked entirely onto the twins. They were closing the distance fast—less than thirty feet away from the boys.

"Julian, left side!" Alex shouted, breaking into a full sprint.

The two mercenaries saw Alex coming. The lead man pulled his hand from his pocket, revealing a silenced pistol hidden beneath a folded newspaper. He accelerated his pace, reaching out a large, gloved hand to grab Noah’s backpack strap.

"Noah! Lucas! Drop!" Alex roared over the noise of the crowd.

The twins heard their father's voice. Without a second thought, Lucas grabbed Noah’s arm and yanked him sideways, both boys tumbling onto the wet grass of the courtyard just as the mercenary’s hand closed on thin air.

The second mercenary pulled his weapon, but Julian was already there. The former intelligence operative hit the man like a freight train, his shoulder driving into the mercenary’s chest and sending him crashing through a row of metal bicycle racks with a deafening rattle.

The lead mercenary turned his gun toward Alex, his face twisted in desperation. He squeezed the trigger, a muffled thwip echoing through the air as a bullet tore through the fabric of Alex's jacket sleeve, grazing his forearm.

Alex didn't even flinch. The minor flash of pain was nothing compared to the absolute, consuming rage that drove him forward. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, his heavy fist crashing into the mercenary’s jaw with a sickening crack. The man’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the stone pavement, unconscious before he hit the ground.

Panic exploded across the courtyard. Parents began screaming, grabbing their children and running for the gates. The school security guards drew their weapons, confused by the sudden violence.

Alex ignored the chaos. He dropped to his knees, scooping Lucas and Noah into his arms, pulling them tight against his chest. They were trembling, their tiny hands clutching his shirt.

"Are you okay? Did they touch you?" Alex gasped, checking their faces, his hands shaking.

"We're okay, Daddy," Lucas sobbed, burying his face in Alex's neck. "Noah bit his apple, he didn't see them, but I remembered what you said about the bad men."

"You did perfect, Lucas. You did amazing," Alex breathed, kissing the top of the boy's head.

Julian walked over, his face grim as he re-holstered his weapon. "Alex, the third man in the van just pulled out. He’s tearing down the alleyway toward the FDR Drive. And Alex... my tech team just pinged the upload server. The Aegis back-door code... someone is transferring it right now from a terminal inside Sterling Tower."

Alex’s eyes widened in sudden, horrific clarity. The breach hadn't just been an external signal from Victor. It was a distraction. Victor knew Alex would run to the school to save his sons.

Which meant Clara was left entirely alone in the tower.

"Clara," Alex whispered, a cold, sickening dread washing over him. "He didn't want the kids, Julian. He used them to draw me out. He’s going after Clara."
