Chapter 4 - The Boardroom of the Heart

The air in the foyer instantly crystallized into ice.
Nathan stepped out into the hallway, shutting the heavy door behind him until it clicked softly, protecting the sleeping child inside from the coming storm.
"Claire," Nathan said calmly, his tone flat and unyielding. "You shouldn't have driven down from Napa."
"I shouldn't have?" Claire let out a dry, incredulous laugh, crossing her arms over her chest. "Nathan, I sat at a private table for two hours waiting for my fiancé-to-be! I called your executive assistant, who was frantic because you turned off your phone. Then I tracked your private jet’s tail number to San Francisco and had my father’s contact at the airport tell me where your driver brought you!"
She stepped closer, pointing a manicured finger at the wooden door.
"Who is she, Nathan? Is she an escort? An old assistant? Is this how you conduct yourself behind my back?"
Nathan’s silver eyes narrowed into two slits of pure, terrifying ice. The security guards immediately took a step back, recognizing the look that had laid low dozens of hostile corporate raiders.
"Watch your mouth, Claire," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave into a quiet, dangerous register. "The woman in that room is Emily Carter. She is a pediatric therapist. She is also the mother of my daughter."
Claire froze. The color drained from her perfectly sculpted face so fast it was as if she had been struck.
"Your... your what?" Claire stammered, her voice losing its icy composure. "You don't have a child."
"I do," Nathan stated coldly. "She is twenty-two months old. Her name is Lily. And I found out she existed three hours ago on the plane."
Claire stared at him, her mind frantically assembling the implications. "A bastard child? From an ex-girlfriend? Nathan, do you have any idea what this will do to the Beaumont-Cole merger? My father’s European investors will never accept—"
"There is no Beaumont-Cole merger," Nathan interrupted flatly.
Claire gasped. "What?"
Nathan reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the velvet ring box, and held it out to her. He didn't open it. He simply set it gently on the tray of the brass room service cart parked in the hallway.
"You are a brilliant, accomplished woman, Claire," Nathan said, his tone softening slightly with honest regret. "You deserve a man who can offer you his whole heart. I was willing to offer you a partnership because I thought my heart was dead. I was wrong. It’s very much alive, and it belongs in that room."
Claire looked at the velvet box on the tray, then looked up at Nathan. Her shock slowly hardened into a cold, aristocratic mask of pride.
"My father will pull his capital from your West Coast logistics venture by morning, Nathan," she said, her voice sharp as glass. "You will lose millions."
"I have billions, Claire," Nathan replied with a small, sad smile. "And until three hours ago, I was the poorest man on earth. Goodnight."
He turned, opened the door, and stepped back into the suite, leaving Claire Beaumont standing alone in the hallway.
When he locked the door behind him, he found Emily standing in the archway of the living room. She had heard everything.
Her eyes were wide, filled with a mixture of disbelief and overwhelming emotion.
"You just threw away an alliance with the Beaumont family," she whispered. "Their European network was the crown jewel of your five-year expansion plan."
Nathan walked toward her, pulling off his watch—the watch Lily had touched—and setting it down on the table.
"I spent five years expanding an empire, Emily," Nathan said softly, standing inches from her. "And I didn't have a single person to share it with. If I have to burn every contract, every stock option, and every corporate alliance to the ground just to earn the right to put Lily to sleep every night... I will do it without hesitation."
Emily swallowed hard, tears finally overflowing her lashes, tracking down her warm cheeks.
"It's not just about Lily, Nathan," she choked out, her hand rising to rest gently against his jawline. "What about us?"
Nathan reached up, his large, warm hand covering hers, pressing her palm tight against his cheek.
"There has never been anyone else, Emily," he confessed, his voice breaking. "Not really. I was just running away from the terror of losing you again. Give me a chance. Don't let me be a ghost in her life. Don't let me be a ghost in yours."
May you like
Emily closed her eyes, letting out a shaky, sobbing breath. She leaned forward, resting her forehead against his chest, right over his beating heart.
Nathan wrapped his massive arms around her, pulling her tight against him, burying his face in her dark hair, holding her as if the world were ending around them.
