Chapter 5 - The Reading Lesson

Six Months Later
The afternoon sun filtered through the grand glass windows of the great room, casting long, warm blocks of light across the herringbone oak floor.
The white bouclé sofas were gone, replaced by comfortable, deep leather couches that were meant to be lived in. A low basket filled with stuffed animals sat in the corner, and a bright green construction-paper dinosaur was taped proudly to the side of the grand refrigerator in the kitchen.
Marcus sat on the floor, his suit jacket long gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Lily was sitting between his knees, her denim jumper covered in a small smudge of green paint, holding a colored pencil in her hand.
Clara sat opposite them, her auburn hair loose, her emerald ring catching the light as she held up a newly drawn flashcard.
"Okay, Lily bug," Clara said, her voice warm and encouraging. "What's this one?"
Lily looked at the card, which featured a beautifully drawn orange fox holding a small gray elephant.
"F-O-X," Lily read out loud, her tiny finger tracing the letters. "Fox! Like Foxy!"
"Brilliant!" Clara laughed, clapping her hands.
Lily turned around, throwing her arms around Marcus’s neck, slamming into his chest with all the force her four-year-old body possessed. Marcus closed his eyes, leaning into the hug, but this time, the expression on his face wasn't one of lingering pain. It was absolute, unbroken peace.
"I did it, Uncle Marky!" Lily giggled.

"You did it, sweetheart," Marcus whispered, burying his face in her brown curls. He looked up, his dark eyes meeting Clara’s across the room, sharing a quiet, beautiful silent language that belonged entirely to them.
The black card, the glass towers, and the corporate boards were miles away, completely forgotten in the warmth of the room. The billionaire had finally found the one thing his money could never negotiate with: the beautiful, chaotic, and perfect sound of home.
