Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Shadows

"Security!" Vanessa’s mother, Evelyn Sterling, shrieked, rushing forward to help her daughter out of the puddle of champagne and broken glass. "Arrest that woman! She assaulted my daughter! She’s a criminal!"

Two beefy security guards in black suits rushed from the ballroom doors, moving toward Naomi.

But before they could lay a finger on her, Ethan stepped directly in front of Naomi, his tall frame completely blocking her from their path. His face was a mask of cold, absolute fury.

"Touch her, and you’re fired before you reach the lobby," Ethan growled at the guards.

The guards froze, looking nervously at one another.

"Ethan!" Vanessa cried, shaking as she stood up, her expensive gown soaked, her face dripping with champagne. "She threw me! She attacked me in front of everyone! Are you seriously defending a maid over your own fiancée?!"

Ethan turned slowly to look at Vanessa. There was no warmth left in his eyes, no obligation, no guilt. Only a profound disgust.

"She didn't attack you, Vanessa. She defended herself from an assault that you initiated in front of three hundred witnesses," Ethan said, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the silent ballroom. "And she is not a maid. She is an employee of the Whitmore family, and she will be treated with respect."

He turned back to the guests, his voice commanding. "The party is over. Thank you all for coming."

"This is an outrage!" Evelyn Sterling roared. "The Sterling family will pull out of the harbor development project tomorrow morning, Ethan! Your grandfather's legacy is dead! You will be ruined!"

"Then let it ruin," Ethan said, his voice steady and calm. "I would rather lose every acre of land than spend another second tied to a family of bullies."

He turned to Naomi, his expression softening into deep concern. "Are you alright?"

"I am fine, Ethan," Naomi said quietly.

But as she looked past Ethan toward the back exit of the ballroom, her trained protection specialist instincts suddenly flared. A cold chill ran down her spine.

At the edge of the crowd, near the shadows of the service exit, stood a man in a waiter’s uniform. He wasn't looking at the drama in the center of the room. His hands were tucked inside his jacket, his body tensed in a highly specific, tactical stance. His gaze was locked entirely on Harold Whitmore.

Naomi’s eyes scanned his posture. The slight forward lean. The way his hand hovered over his left rib cage, where a shoulder holster would sit. The cold, lifeless focus in his eyes.

He wasn't a waiter. He was an assassin.

And he was about to move.

"Ethan," Naomi whispered, her voice dropping into a low, commanding tone that made Ethan instantly stiffen. "Take your grandfather out of the ballroom. Now. Through the east service exit."

Ethan blinked, confused by the sudden change in her demeanor. "Naomi, what—"

"Do not ask questions, Ethan. Do it now. We have a security breach."

Before Ethan could reply, the man in the waiter’s uniform pulled his hand out of his jacket, revealing a sleek, silenced semi-automatic pistol. He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Harold Whitmore’s chest.
