Chapter 3 - The Quiet Vengeance

While medical orderlies with pristine equipment arrived to wheel Sofia up to the seventh-floor executive suite, Alessandro stepped back out into the sterile hallway.

Marco was waiting near the nursing station, holding a leather folder.

“Boss,” Marco said, stepping forward. “I ran a background check on the Delgado family as you requested on the way here. There’s more to the story than just unpaid medical bills.”

Alessandro took the folder, flipping it open under the harsh lights. “Speak.”

“Sofia Delgado has been working three jobs,” Marco read from the tablet. “Night cleaning at the Moretti offices, morning cleaning at a commercial warehouse in Queens, and weekends at a local diner. But three months ago, her apartment building was bought out by a shell corporation tied to Marcus Vance—one of our sub-contractors in the Brooklyn dockyards.”

Alessandro’s eyes flickered. “Vance Properties?”

“Yes, boss. They hiked her rent by sixty percent overnight, slapped her with bogus maintenance fees, and when she fell behind two weeks on rent due to a bout of bronchitis, they threatened eviction and seized her savings account through predatory legal fees.”

The hallway seemed to grow colder.

Marco knew that look. It was the look Alessandro wore right before an enemy’s empire was systematically dismantled, brick by brick, without a single shot being fired.

“Where is Marcus Vance right now?” Alessandro asked, his voice dangerously soft.

“He’s hosting a dinner at Le Bernardin with some shipping executives from Montreal.”

“Call the restaurant,” Alessandro instructed, sliding the tablet back into Marco’s hands. “Tell them I am terminating my business relationship with him effective immediately. Then, send two cars to his office on Madison Avenue. I want every ledger, every lease agreement, and every predatory contract his company holds seized and brought to my study by midnight.”

“And the eviction notice against Mrs. Delgado?” Marco asked.

“Tear it up,” Alessandro said coldly. “Then buy the entire apartment building through a blind trust. Transfer the deed directly into Emma Delgado’s name, held in escrow until she turns eighteen. And make sure the previous landlord understands that if he ever knocks on that door again, he will do it from the bottom of the East River.”

Marco nodded once. “Consider it done, boss.”

“One more thing,” Alessandro added as he turned back toward the door of Room 412. “Find out which loan shark or predatory collection agency harassed her while she was in the hospital.”

“Already on it, boss. They won’t be operating in this city by sunrise.”

Alessandro pushed the door open and stepped back into the private room.

Sofia was resting comfortably against crisp white Egyptian cotton pillows, an IV drip of advanced antibiotics humming quietly into her arm. Color was already beginning to return to her pale cheeks. Emma sat on a plush velvet armchair beside the bed, eating a cup of strawberry gelatin that a terrified head nurse had personally rushed up from the cafeteria.

When Emma saw Alessandro enter, she stopped eating and looked up with wide, solemn eyes.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Yes, Emma?”

“Is my mom going to be okay?”

Alessandro walked over, resting one large hand gently on the back of the velvet chair. For a man whose hands had signed death warrants and shaped the criminal landscape of the eastern seaboard, touching something so small and fragile felt entirely unnatural—and yet, strangely grounding.

“Your mother is going to be fine,” Alessandro said, his voice softening in a way Rosa had not heard since he was a boy. “And you are never going to worry about cleaning supplies or rent again.”

Sofia looked up from her pillows, her eyes swimming with disbelief and profound gratitude. “Sir... I don't know how to thank you. You didn't have to do this.”

“Life is full of debts, Mrs. Delgado,” Alessandro replied quietly, turning toward the window where the rain had finally begun to clear, revealing the glittering skyline of the city he owned. “Some are paid in blood and fear. Others are paid in grace.”
