Chapter 4 - The Service Wing Confession

The service wing of the Whitmore estate was quiet, smelling faintly of lemon oil, freshly laundered linen, and bleach.

Maya stood beside the long stainless-steel prep table in the main pantry, her hands trembling slightly as she wiped down a tray of crystal champagne flutes. Her mind was racing. The encounter in the private dining room had torn open a vault she had kept locked for over two decades.

Adrien Whitmore—the billionaire CEO, the man who commanded boardrooms and dictated market trends—was the same bruised, skinny boy who had shared a blanket with her in a freezing Chicago basement during the worst winter of their lives.

He hadn't forgotten.

He had remembered her name, her habits, her scar, and the way she held her breath when cornered.

A soft knock sounded on the service door.

Before Maya could answer, the door pushed open, and Elena stepped inside, closing it firmly behind her. The older woman’s face was etched with deep lines of worry.

"Maya," Elena said, walking straight over to the prep table and placing her hands on the stainless steel. "Mr. Whitmore asked for you in his private study. Upstairs."

Maya’s heart leaped into her throat. "Upstairs? Right now? The guests are arriving for the main announcement in twenty minutes."

"I know," Elena said grimly. "And Vanessa Sinclair is downstairs holding court like a queen waiting for her coronation. But Adrien doesn't care about the guests right now. He cares about what's happening in his office."

"Elena, I'm just a housekeeper," Maya whispered, feeling a sudden wave of panic wash over her. "If Vanessa or her family see me going into his private study during the gala, it will cause a scandal. People are already talking about how much time he spends checking on the service details."

"Let them talk," Elena snapped with sudden, fierce conviction. "That woman downstairs is trying to destroy everything Adrien's father built. She’s a vulture, Maya. And you're the only person in this mausoleum who isn't wearing a mask."

Elena reached out, gripping Maya’s arm gently.

"Go upstairs. He needs someone who knew him before he had a billion dollars to his name. He needs someone real."

Maya stared at the older woman for a long moment. Then, swallowing hard, she untied her crisp white apron, folded it neatly, and laid it on the prep table.

She smoothed down her dark service skirt, straightened her blouse, and walked out of the pantry toward the back staircase.
