Chapter 5 - The Sovereign Claim

Daniel stood up.
The silence that filled the room was no longer the silence of grief. It was the silence of a father who had just found his reason to fight. The ambitious, cold machine that Daniel had been for three years died in that exact second. In its place stood a protector.
"You think you can threaten my family in my house, Richard?" Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly quiet that the two attorneys behind Richard visibly took a step back.
"I’m protecting the company, Daniel!" Richard snapped, though a flicker of unease crossed his eyes. "You have no legal right to this child! The paperwork you signed in your grief authorized the destruction of the sample! Legally, she doesn't exist!"
"Then I will make her exist," Daniel said, walking over to the sofa.
He didn't look at Richard. He knelt down in front of Maria and Sophia, looking at the two women who had saved his life without him even knowing it. He gently placed his hand over Maria’s trembling fingers.
"Maria," Daniel said softly, his hazel-green eyes shining with absolute clarity. "Do you trust me?"
Maria looked at him through her tears, seeing the ghost of Claire's warmth finally alive in his eyes. She nodded slowly. "Yes."
Daniel stood back up, facing Richard and his lawyers. He pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a single speed-dial button.
"Evelyn," Daniel commanded the moment his chief legal counsel answered. "I need you to execute Protocol: Sovereign Succession. I am transferring forty-nine percent of my personal, non-voting shares in Whitfield Tech into an immediate, irrevocable trust for my daughter, Sophia Whitfield. And I want Maria Alvarez appointed as the co-trustee of the entire estate."
Richard’s jaw dropped. "You... you can't do that! That gives her veto power over the merger!"
"I am the majority shareholder, Richard," Daniel said, a predatory, victorious smile finally breaking across his face. "I built this empire. And as of this moment, I am initiating a full forensic audit of your corporate expense accounts. The three million dollars you embezzled from the charity foundation to cover your private gambling debts in Macau? I’ve had the files for six months. I was just waiting for a reason to destroy you."
Richard’s face turned an ash-gray color. He stumbled backward, his hands shaking as he looked at the two attorneys, who were already closing their tablets to distance themselves from his collapse.

"Get out of my house, Richard," Daniel said, his voice like iron. "Before I have the federal marshals arrest you in my driveway."
Without another word, Richard turned and fled the room, his lawyers scurrying behind him like rats leaving a sinking ship.
