Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The glass tumbler in Julian’s hand shattered.

Amber scotch and sharp shards of crystal spilled across the polished floorboards, but Julian didn't seem to feel the deep cut on his palm where red blood was beginning to ooze.

“Noah...” Julian gasped, his voice a terrifying, gutteral growl. “They are poisoning my boy?”

“Not enough to kill him,” Elena said quickly, stepping forward and using a clean handkerchief from her pocket to firmly wrap Julian’s bleeding hand, entirely unbothered by the blood. “Just enough to keep his central nervous system in a state of permanent inflammatory shock. It prevents his auditory nerves from processing speech correctly. It keeps him non-verbal, hyper-reactive, and mentally exhausted.”

Julian looked down at her hands wrapping his palm. Her touch was firm, cool, and filled with an absolute, unwavering strength.

“That’s why you brought your own food into the house,” Julian realized, his mind piecing together three weeks of observations. “That’s why you insisted on preparing Noah’s meals yourself in the small service kitchen.”

“I’ve been intercepting his food since the day I arrived,” Elena nodded. “I replaced his milk with pure almond milk I make in my room. That is why his brain inflammation started dropping four days ago. That is why his speech pathways opened up today. The poison is leaving his system.”

Julian closed his eyes, leaning his forehead against Elena’s shoulder for three brief, desperate seconds. The weight of his guilt, mixed with the sudden, fiery hope of his son’s recovery, crushed the air from his lungs.

“I will kill them,” Julian whispered against her shoulder. “I will tear Arthur Vane apart with my bare hands.”

“If you confront them now,” Elena said, her fingers tightening around his bandage, “their lawyers will tie this up in court for ten years. Arthur has spent four years building an ironclad legal structure around the Cross Family Trust. They will claim I am a disgraced, crazy former nurse who infiltrated your home to manipulate an unstable billionaire.”

Julian pulled back, looking down into her pale, resolute face. “Then what do we do?”

“Tomorrow is Friday,” Elena said, a cold, brilliant smile flickering across her lips. “The estate’s legal counsel and Dr. Harrison are coming to witness Noah’s official eighth-birthday competency assessment. Victoria plans to execute the trust transfer documents before the board on Monday.”

“We let them set the trap,” Julian realized, his sharp corporate intellect reigniting like a furnace.

“We let them sign the documents,” Elena agreed. “And then we destroy them in front of the entire family.”
