Chapter 3 - The Ambush in Nassau

The sun shone brightly over the turquoise waters of Prince George Wharf in Nassau, Bahamas.
On the top deck of the Royal Empress, Ophelia Shaw leaned back on a plush teak lounger, sipping a mimosa through a glass straw. She wore a wide-brimmed designer hat and an ivory linen caftan that had cost four thousand dollars on Julian’s corporate card.
Beside her, Vanessa was applying sunscreen to her shoulders, scrolling through her phone.
"Did you check on the boy?" Ophelia asked lazily, not bothering to lift her sunglasses.
"I sent him a text yesterday," Vanessa replied with a soft, indifferent shrug. "Told him there was leftover lasagna in the freezer. He’s fine, Mother. He’s twelve. He spends all his time on his computer anyway."
"He shouldn't be eating your lasagna," Marcus Shaw scoffed from a nearby lounge chair, swirling a scotch on the rocks. "The kid is spoiled rotten. Once we sign the guardianship papers in Chicago next Friday, the first thing we're doing is sending him to that military boarding school in Idaho."
Ophelia chuckled softly. "Let’s not be hasty, Marcus. As long as Ethan is technically living under our roof, we control the payout from Sarah’s trust. Five hundred thousand a year in 'administrative fees' for his care. We need him visible, just quiet."
Vanessa smiled, checking her phone again. "I can't wait to see Julian's face when he comes back from Minneapolis. He thinks he's the master of the universe, but he has no idea I’ve already transferred the deed to the carriage house into Mother's name."
Suddenly, the lounge music over the ship's speakers cut out with a sharp pop.
Four heavy-set men wearing pristine white naval uniforms and dark tactical belts strode onto the VIP sun deck, flanked by two uniformed officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
The lead security officer stopped directly in front of Ophelia’s lounger.
"Ophelia Shaw? Vanessa Mercer? Marcus Shaw?" the officer asked in a stern, booming voice that attracted the attention of fifty wealthy passengers nearby.
Vanessa sat up, adjusting her sunglasses with an annoyed frown. "Yes? What is the meaning of this intrusion? We are VIP guests in the Grand Royal Suite."
"Ma'am," the officer stated coldly, pulling a printed red administrative notice from his clipboard. "At 06:00 hours today, the Bahamian Maritime Authority received an international fraud alert from Maritime Financial Services and Mercer Global Logistics Corporation."
Ophelia’s face paled slightly behind her makeup. "What... what alert?"
"The black corporate credit card used to purchase your suites, onboard amenities, and private helicopter charters—totaling over two hundred and forty thousand dollars—has been flagged as stolen by the primary account holder, Mr. Julian Mercer."
A collective gasp swept through the sun deck.
Vanessa stood up, her cheeks flushing red with anger. "That's ridiculous! I am Julian Mercer’s wife! I am authorized to use his corporate accounts!"
"Not according to this," the police officer countered, turning the clipboard around.
Printed on the page was a official revocation of authorization signed by the Chief Financial Officer of Mercer Global Logistics, alongside a Cook County court order freezing all assets associated with the names Ophelia Shaw, Vanessa Shaw-Mercer, and Marcus Shaw.
"In addition," the officer continued, "there is an active international custody warrant issued by Cook County Child Protective Services regarding the abandonment of a minor child left unattended in a residential estate in Illinois."
"Abandonment?!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking as several passengers pulled out their phones to record the scene. "He had food! He had a key!"
"Hand over your passports and step off the vessel immediately," the police officer commanded, gesturing to his men.
"Do you know who we are?!" Ophelia screamed, standing up so fast her champagne glass overturned, splashing mimosa across her linen caftan. "My daughter is the mistress of the Mercer estate! You can't touch us!"
"Ma'am," the lead security officer said, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You can walk off the gangway voluntarily, or we can carry you off in restraints. The choice is yours."
Ten minutes later, the Shaw family was escorted down the main gangway of the cruise ship in full view of eight hundred cheering and filming tourists. Their luggage was unceremoniously dumped onto the concrete pier, and their passports were confiscated by Bahamian immigration authorities.
Standing at the end of the pier, leaning against the hood of a dark blue Rolls-Royce, was Thomas Vance.
He wore a tailored grey suit and dark sunglasses. As the police led the weeping, screaming Shaw family toward the immigration holding station, Thomas lowered his glasses, looking Vanessa directly in the eye.
"Thomas?!" Vanessa gasped, trying to reach toward him. "Thomas, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake! Call Julian!"
Thomas took a quiet step forward, his voice cold enough to freeze the tropical air.
"Julian knows, Vanessa," Thomas said smoothly. "In fact, he's at the house right now. He found the secret room behind your mother's wardrobe."
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. Her jaw dropped, the blood draining from her face so completely she looked like she was about to faint onto the hot concrete.

"He... he found..." she stammered.
"He found everything," Thomas cut her off flatly. "Enjoy your stay in Nassau, ladies. The holding cells near the harbor are notoriously warm this time of year."
