Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit

The revelation hung in the warm air of the cottage like a physical blow.

Clara sat frozen in her chair, her mind racing back through five years of trauma, hiding, fear, and lies. She remembered the night at the Plaza Hotel—the shadowy suite, the comforting presence of a powerful man who had treated her with gentle care when she was broken and weeping, and the hazy aftermath where Marco had arrived the next morning, screaming at her, telling her she had disgraced the family with a rival mobster.

Marco had manipulated her. He had lied to her. He had convinced her that the child she carried was the bastard offspring of an enemy, ensuring she would remain terrified, isolated, and easy to control.

"My God," Clara whispered, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with uncontrollable sobs. "My God... all this time... she was yours?"

Vincent dropped to one knee before her chair.

For a man who had commanded vast criminal networks, who had ordered executions and built a multi-billion-dollar empire, his posture now was one of profound, humbled surrender.

He gently reached out, taking Clara’s shaking hands in his own broad, warm palms.

"I didn't know, Clara," Vincent said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I swear to you on my dead daughter's soul... I didn't know. If I had known you were carrying my child five years ago, I would have brought you to Greystone. I would have protected you with every gun, every dollar, and every breath I have."

Clara looked into his dark eyes. She saw no deception there. She saw only the immense, staggering weight of a father who had spent five years grieving an empty house, suddenly finding a miracle hidden in the dark.

"Why did Marco do it?" Clara asked, her voice cracking. "Why would my own brother try to destroy us?"

Vincent stood up, his face hardening once more into an unyielding mask of stone.

"Because Marco is a parasite," Vincent said coldly. "For ten years, Marco believed he was my undisputed heir. He knew I had no other children after Sophia died. He knew that if I passed away without a direct blood successor, the Moretti empire, the holdings, the billions in assets—all of it would revert to his management."

Vincent walked over to the desk, picking up the thick envelope of cash Marco had given Clara hours earlier.

"If Marco admitted that you were alive, he would have to answer for trying to kill you," Vincent explained, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp edge. "And if he admitted that Mia was my daughter... his claim to my empire vanished in a single second. Mia is the rightful heir to everything I own. Marco couldn't let her live."

At that moment, the front door of the cottage clicked open.

Anton stepped inside, his dark raincoat dripping water onto the entryway rug. He held an encrypted satellite tablet in his hand, his expression grave.

"Mr. Moretti," Anton said quietly. "We have a situation."

Vincent turned to face his security chief. "Report."

"Our perimeter surveillance just intercepted a encrypted radio burst from Mr. Bellini’s private residence in Westchester," Anton said, handing the tablet to Vincent. "Marco isn't sleeping. He’s spent the last two hours contacting a mercenary crew from South Jersey—the same crew used by the Genovese family for high-value contract hits."

Clara gasped, standing up from her chair, her face draining of all color.

"He’s moving fast, Boss," Anton continued. "Marco realizes that Elena—or rather, Clara—didn't take the money and run tonight. He knows the perimeter of Greystone is locked down. The mercenaries are mobilizing six heavily armed vehicles. They plan to breach the rear estate gates at four o'clock this morning—one hour from now."

Vincent looked at the tablet screen. The GPS tracking showed six unmarked black SUVs staging at an abandoned warehouse three miles north along the Hudson River.

Marco wasn't just coming to kill Clara and Mia. He was coming to stage a bloody coup—to eliminate Clara, erase the evidence, and if necessary, execute Vincent himself and frame it on rival families.

Vincent handed the tablet back to Anton.

He didn't panic. He didn't raise his voice. A cold, terrifying calm settled over his entire demeanor—the calm of a predator that had finally identified its prey.

"Anton," Vincent said softly.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"How many of our tactical security men are currently on the estate grounds?"

"Twenty-four, sir. All former military. All loyal to you personally."

Vincent turned to Clara. He walked over to her, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder.

"Clara," Vincent said, his voice soft and reassuring. "Take Mia upstairs to the safe room behind the master wardrobe. Lock the steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Anton."

Clara looked into his eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Vincent... Marco has mercenaries. He’s desperate."

Vincent looked at her, a faint, lethal smile playing on his lips—a smile that made Clara realize why the entire East Coast underworld trembled at the name Don Moretti.

"Marco built his entire life on my shadow, Clara," Vincent whispered smoothly. "Tonight, he’s going to learn what happens when the shadow comes for him."
