Chapter 4 - The Fragile Heart

The private waiting room on the fourth floor of Hartford Children's Hospital was quiet, save for the hum of the air purification units and the distant beeping of monitors.

Maria Alvarez sat on a vinyl couch, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her eyes glued to the double doors leading into the pediatric surgical suite. She looked pale, exhausted, and consumed by the agonizing fear that only a mother waiting for her child to undergo heart surgery could know.

The door opened softly, and Ethan walked in.

He had driven straight from Manhattan, leaving his executive team to handle the press release for the Midwest acquisition. He carried a large paper bag from a high-end bakery in his hand.

"Ethan," Maria breathed, standing up quickly. "You didn't have to come all the way back from the city."

Over the last month, the formal distance between them had completely evaporated. Ethan had insisted she call him by his first name, and he had personally arranged for Dr. Richard Sterling—the nation's leading pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon—to perform Sofia's procedure.

"Where else would I be?" Ethan said gently, placing the bakery bag on the small table beside her. "How long has she been in?"

"Two hours," Maria whispered, her voice breaking as tears pooled in her eyes. "Dr. Sterling said it would take four. Every minute feels like a hundred years, Ethan. What if something goes wrong? What if her little body can't handle it?"

Ethan stepped closer, placing a warm, solid hand on Maria's shoulder.

"Sofia is the strongest person I've ever met," Ethan said, his voice rich with quiet, absolute conviction. "She made a cake out of raw eggs, flour, and marshmallows and forced a billionaire to eat it. A small heart defect doesn't stand a chance against her."

A watery laugh escaped Maria's lips, and she reached up, wiping her tears with a tissue. "Thank you, Ethan. For everything. For the hospital, for Dr. Sterling... I don't know how I will ever repay you."

"You don't owe me anything, Maria," Ethan said softly. "You and Sofia saved my life. I'm just paying a tiny fraction of the debt."

For the next two hours, Ethan stayed right beside Maria.

He didn't check his phone. He didn't review stock prices. He sat on the hospital couch, listening to Maria talk about Sofia's baby years, about her late husband who had passed away when Sofia was just an infant, and about the quiet dreams she had for her daughter's future.

At 1:15 PM, the heavy double doors of the surgical suite clicked open.

Dr. Sterling walked out, wearing green scrubs, his surgical mask hanging around his neck. He looked tired, but a broad, reassuring smile was spread across his face.

Maria jumped up from the couch, her hands clutching her chest. "Doctor?"

"She did fantastically, Maria," Dr. Sterling announced warmly. "The defect was completely repaired with zero complications. Her vitals are rock solid. We're moving her to the recovery room right now, and you can see her in about twenty minutes."

Maria collapsed back onto the couch, covering her face with her hands, letting out a loud, shuddering sob of pure relief. Ethan caught her shoulders, holding her steady, his own chest swelling with a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude.

An hour later, Ethan and Maria stood beside a small hospital bed in the Pediatric ICU.

Sofia looked tiny against the white hospital sheets, surrounded by monitoring equipment, a small oxygen tube resting beneath her nose. Her dark curls were spread across the pillow, but her cheeks already had a healthy, warm pink color that hadn't been there before.

Slowly, her dark eyes fluttered open.

She blinked against the bright lights, looking around the room until her gaze landed on Maria. "Mommy?"

"I'm right here, my sweet girl," Maria wept, taking Sofia's small hand and kissing her fingers. "I'm right here. You were so brave."

Sofia's eyes drifted slowly over to Ethan, who was standing at the foot of the bed, wearing a soft, proud smile.

"Mr. Cole?" Sofia whispered, her voice thick with sleep.

"Hey, kiddo," Ethan said gently, stepping closer to the bedside.

Sofia looked at her chest, then up at Ethan. "Did the doctor fix my heart?"

"He fixed it completely," Ethan assured her. "It's as good as new."

Sofia smiled faintly, reaching out her tiny, free hand toward him. Ethan immediately reached down, letting her small fingers wrap around his index finger.

May you like

"Now I can help fix yours," Sofia murmured, her eyelids growing heavy again as the pain medication took hold.

Ethan swallowed down the lump in his throat, bending down to kiss the top of her small, curly head. "You already did, Sofia. You already did."
