Chapter 6 - The Brother in the DarkPreston Hawthorne had been dead to Richard for six years.

Not legally. Not physically. But in every way that mattered, Richard had buried him.
The last time Richard saw his older brother, Preston had stood in a glass conference room overlooking San Francisco and called Clara a parasite with a medical degree. Richard had punched him so hard Preston crashed into the boardroom wall. Security separated them. Lawyers followed. By morning, Preston’s access to Hawthorne Tech was revoked.
Richard had told himself that was the end.
But evil rarely left through the front door and stayed gone.
Now Preston’s voice poured from Victoria’s phone inside the corridor where Richard’s children trembled.
“Answer me,” Preston said. “Did he find it?”
Victoria’s face shifted from fury to fear.
Richard held out his hand.
“Give me the phone.”
Victoria laughed nervously. “Richard—”
He stepped closer.
“Now.”
For once, she obeyed.
Richard took the phone and lifted it to his ear.
“Hello, Preston.”
Silence.
Then a soft chuckle.
“Well,” Preston said. “The dead finally speaks.”
Emily held Noah tighter. Ethan and Liam pressed against her sides.
Richard’s voice did not rise.
“You sent Victoria.”
“I introduced an opportunity. She did the rest.”
“Why?”
“Because you took everything from me.”
“You falsified research.”
“I built valuation,” Preston snapped. “You were always too sentimental to understand scale.”
Richard looked toward Clara’s journal lying on the study desk.
“Did Clara know you were still involved?”
“She knew too much.”
Emily’s breath caught.
Richard’s knuckles whitened around the phone.
“What does that mean?”
Preston paused.
“It means your sainted wife had a talent for opening doors she should have left closed.”
Richard’s entire body went still.
Emily saw the moment his grief became something sharper.
“Were you involved in Clara’s death?”
Victoria whispered, “Preston, don’t.”
Preston laughed.
“Careful, little brother. Accusations require proof. And from what I hear, you just falsely accused the beloved maid in front of witnesses. Your judgment is not exactly sparkling today.”
Richard’s face tightened.
The man on the phone knew.
He knew about Emily. The watch. The public humiliation.
That meant Victoria had been reporting everything.
Richard looked at her with pure disgust.
Preston continued, “Here is what happens now. Victoria leaves with dignity. You announce a private separation due to family pressure. The maid signs a nondisclosure agreement and disappears. The children receive therapy from someone I approve. And that journal vanishes.”
Emily felt Ethan trembling.
Richard spoke softly.
“No.”
The word was simple.
Final.
Preston’s voice cooled. “Think carefully.”
“I have.”
“You have three sons with fragile medical histories, a company under regulatory review, and a reputation that depends on investors believing you are rational.”
Richard glanced at Emily.
She understood immediately.
Preston would not just attack him.
He would attack the children’s stability. Emily’s reputation. Clara’s memory. Everything.
Richard said, “You’re threatening my family.”
“I am reminding you that family can become expensive when mishandled.”
Noah whispered, “Daddy?”
Richard looked down.
Three frightened faces stared back at him.
For five years, he had avoided being fully present because every glance at them reopened the moment he lost Clara. But now he saw what avoidance had cost. His sons did not need a billionaire. They needed a father who stood between them and the darkness.
Richard ended the call.
Victoria stared at him.
“You have no idea what you just did.”
“Yes,” Richard said. “I do.”
He turned to Marcus.
“Contact Daniel Pierce. Criminal counsel. Family counsel. Corporate counsel. I want every server preserved. Every staff device imaged. Every access log copied. No one enters or exits without recording.”
Marcus nodded. “Already started.”
Victoria’s eyes widened. “You can’t detain me.”
“No,” Richard said. “But I can remove access to my property, my accounts, my children, and my life.”
He looked at the guards.
“Escort Ms. Lane to the guest wing. She may pack under supervision. Her phone stays with legal.”
Victoria recoiled. “You can’t take my phone.”
Marcus said, “The device contains communications relevant to threats made against minors in this home.”
Victoria pointed at Emily.
“This is her fault.”
Emily did not step back.
“No,” she said. “It is yours.”
Victoria lunged verbally where she could not physically.
“You think he’ll protect you? He protects himself. Men like Richard always do. Today he needs you because his sons screamed. Tomorrow he’ll remember you’re a liability.”
Emily looked at Richard.
The words hurt because some part of her feared they were true.
Richard saw that fear.
“I can’t undo what I did,” he said in front of everyone. “But I can make sure no one else pays for it.”
Victoria scoffed.
“Beautiful speech.”
Richard ignored her.
“Emily Carter is not leaving this house under accusation. She will remain here tonight only if she chooses, with full authority over the children’s immediate care. Tomorrow, she will have independent legal counsel paid for by me but chosen by her. And before the end of the day, every staff member who saw me accuse her will receive the truth in writing.”
Emily’s eyes stung.
It was not forgiveness.
But it was the first brick of repair.
Victoria was dragged away still shouting.
When the corridor finally quieted, Liam looked up at Richard.
“Daddy, is Uncle Preston a bad man?”
Richard crouched.
He looked at his son for a long moment.
Then he told the truth.
“Yes.”
Liam’s chin trembled.
“Is he coming here?”
Richard opened his arms slowly, asking permission without words.
After a pause, Liam stepped into them.
Richard held his son like someone learning how to carry glass.
“No,” he whispered. “Not if I can help it.”
Emily watched Ethan and Noah lean closer too.
For the first time, the triplets were not only clinging to her.
May you like
They were looking at their father.
And Richard Hawthorne, who had once controlled entire markets without blinking, looked terrified by the fragile trust of three little boys.
