Chapter 4 - The Billionaire on His Knees

The street went dead quiet again.

The autumn wind blew softly, carrying the dry leaves across the road. Emily’s worn suitcase sat near the curb, a reminder of the humiliation she had endured just twenty minutes prior.

Richard turned back toward Emily and his sons.

The powerful tech mogul, worth billions of dollars, looked broken. He walked slowly up to them, dropped to his knees on the hard asphalt, and looked at his three little boys.

"Ethan... Noah... Liam..." Richard swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over his eyes. "I am so... so sorry. I failed you. I didn't listen to you. I let a stranger hurt you."

The triplets didn't answer. They kept their small arms wrapped tightly around Emily’s legs, looking at their father with cautious, hurt eyes.

Richard then looked up at Emily.

"Emily," he rasped, his hands trembling as he reached out toward her yellow rubber gloves. "There are no words in the English language that can excuse what I did to you today. I was blind. I was arrogant. I let my own desire for a normal family cloud my judgment, and I almost destroyed the only real family my sons have ever known."

He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his leather wallet, and took out a key.

"Please," Richard begged, his voice cracking. "Come back. Not as a housekeeper. Not as someone who cleans my floors or wears a uniform. Come back as their guardian. Name your salary, name your terms, take complete control of the house... just please don't leave them. Don't leave us."

Emily looked down at the billionaire begging on the street. Then she looked at the three little boys who were holding onto her uniform as if she were their only anchor in a stormy sea.

She gently took off her yellow cleaning gloves and dropped them onto her suitcase.

"I won't leave the boys, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said softly, but firmly. "But things in your house are going to change. Starting today."
