Chapter 2 - The Security Footage Unravels

The high-definition monitor glowed softly in the dim basement office, casting blue light across Sebastian’s calm, terrifying face. Veronica stood frozen beside the marble fireplace, her manicured fingers digging so tightly into her leather clipboard that her knuckles turned white.
“Fast-forward to 4:50 PM,” Sebastian instructed the security officer.
The screen flickered. The digital timestamp in the bottom right corner sped forward. On the top-left quadrant, the camera covering the narrow linen room displayed the neat stacks of tablecloths. Behind the third row of shelf crates, the blue fabric of Lily’s bassinet was barely visible.
At 4:52 PM, the linen room door opened on screen.
It wasn't a waitress looking for napkins. It was Veronica Hale.
She entered the room quickly, looking over her shoulder toward the busy kitchen corridor. But she wasn't alone. Walking directly behind her was a tall, heavily built man in a dark charcoal suit, wearing an expensive silk tie and an embroidered signet ring on his right hand. His face was sharp, aristocratic, and completely unfamiliar to me.
I gasped, clutching Lily tighter. “Who is that?”
Sebastian didn't answer. His gaze was fixed on the screen, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
On the screen, Veronica pointed toward the back shelf. The man in the suit stepped forward, reached behind the damask tablecloths, and lifted Lily out of her bassinet. Lily stirred, kicking her small feet, but the man wrapped her in a thick, dark wool coat he had been carrying over his arm, muffling her movements.
At 4:55 PM, Veronica handed the man a small, clear plastic bag containing Lily’s yellow rattle and spare pacifier, which she had snatched from my tote bag.
“Pause,” Sebastian commanded.
The video froze. The high-resolution camera captured the man’s face in stark detail as he turned toward the corridor.
“Do you know this man, Maya?” Sebastian asked, his voice low and dangerous.
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. “No. I’ve never seen him before in my life.”
“Look closer,” Sebastian said, stepping beside my chair and pointing at the man's lapel pin—a small silver crest featuring a stylized falcon over a shield. “That is the house crest of Vance Sterling. The Sterling Financial Group.”
The name struck me like a physical blow.
Julian Sterling.
My mind raced back two years. Julian Sterling—the thirty-two-year-old heir to one of Chicago’s oldest real estate dynasties. I had met him when I worked as an assistant at an art gallery opening downtown. He had pursued me relentlessly for three months, filling my tiny apartment with lilies, taking me to expensive dinners, promising me a life beyond anything I had ever imagined. But the moment I told him I was pregnant, the fairy tale shattered.
Julian’s mother, Victoria Sterling—a woman whose cold social dominance was feared across the Gold Coast—had intervened immediately. Julian was given a choice: cut all ties with a penniless waitress or be permanently stripped of his family trust and executive position at Sterling Financial.
Julian chose the money.
He sent a team of three corporate lawyers to my apartment with a fifty-thousand-dollar check and a non-disclosure agreement demanding I terminate the pregnancy or leave the state. I tore the check into pieces, threw the papers in their faces, and kicked them out of my home. Six weeks later, Julian married an oil heiress in a televised ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral. I never heard from him again. I assumed they had forgotten I existed.
“Julian Sterling,” I whispered, tears finally overflowing and tracing burning lines down my cheeks. “Julian’s family... but that isn't Julian on the screen.”
“That’s Arthur Vance,” Sebastian said coldly. “Victoria Sterling’s personal head of security and asset recovery. A former private investigator who specializes in making inconvenient problems disappear for the Sterling family.”
Sebastian turned his eyes back to the monitor. “Play video.”
The screen resumed. On the tape, Arthur Vance held Lily under his coat while Veronica unlocked the heavy door leading to Sebastian’s basement staircase. Their plan was clear: Vance was supposed to carry Lily down the service stairs, through the private alley exit at the bottom of the building, and into a waiting vehicle without ever stepping foot in the main restaurant.
But as Vance opened the heavy cellar door at 4:57 PM, Lily kicked violently inside his coat, knocking her yellow rattle loose from his pocket. It bounced down the carpeted stairs.
Vance panicked. Hearing the sound of kitchen staff approaching the corridor, he thrust the baby through the open basement door onto the top landing, pulled the door shut to lock it behind her, and ran down the main corridor toward the emergency exit, leaving Veronica to cover his retreat.
Veronica had intended to let the baby lie on the stairs until the Sterling family’s legal team arrived with Child Protective Services to claim that I had abandoned my daughter in a dark cellar.
The silence in Sebastian’s office was absolute.
The two security guards looked sickened. Veronica was shaking violently now, her eyes darting toward the locked door as if searching for a miracle.
“Veronica,” Sebastian said, stepping toward her with slow, measured strides. “Victoria Sterling paid you. How much?”
“Mr. Calder... please,” Veronica whimpered, falling back against the mantelpiece. “You don't understand... the Sterling family... they told me the child was legally theirs! They said Maya was an unfit mother, a unstable woman who was using the child to blackmail them! They offered fifty thousand dollars just to verify the baby was here and facilitate a private custody transfer!”
“A private custody transfer,” Sebastian repeated softly. “In the basement of my restaurant.”
“They said CPS was already involved!” Veronica cried out, tears ruining her heavy mascara. “They said it was a legal recovery operation! I was just helping a prominent family rescue their bloodline!”
“You committed federal child abduction, corporate espionage, and evidence tampering on my property,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the air feel thin. “You brought a known fixer into my building, targeted one of my employees, and endangered an eight-month-old infant.”
Sebastian turned to his lead security officer. “Put her in the holding room in the sub-basement. Confiscate her phone, her keys, and her access badges. Call Detective Miller at the Special Investigations Division. Tell her I have a high-profile kidnapping conspiracy ready for her team.”
“Mr. Calder! No! Please!” Veronica shrieked as the two large security guards grabbed her arms, pinning them behind her back. “Victoria Sterling will ruin you! She has judges in her pocket! She has the city council!”
Sebastian didn't even look at her as she was dragged out the door, her screams fading into the heavy concrete stairwell before the oak door clicked shut.
Sebastian turned back to me.
I was sitting on the edge of the velvet chair, holding Lily close to my heart, my whole body trembling with a mixture of profound relief and terrifying dread. The Sterling family knew where Lily was. They had hired people to stalk me. They had invaded my workplace.
“They’re going to take her from me, aren't they?” I sobbed, looking up at Sebastian through a blur of tears. “They have billions of dollars, Mr. Calder. I live above a laundromat. I make twelve dollars an hour plus tips. If they bring lawyers and judges into this...”
Sebastian walked over to his desk, picked up his glass of water, and handed it to me. His gray eyes were steady, unyielding, and fierce.
“They have billions of dollars, Maya,” Sebastian said quietly, leaning against the edge of his desk and looking down at me. “But they made one catastrophic error.”
May you like
“What error?”
“They chose my restaurant to do it,” Sebastian said. “And nobody takes anything from my house.”
