Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the PastAndrew ignored the phone. It rang three, four, five times before cutting off to voicemail. But the interruption had broken the spell. Elizabeth gently untangled herself from Alex and stood up, smoothing down her apron, her professional mask sliding back into place with practiced efficiency.

“You should answer that, Mr. James,” she said quietly, turning her attention back to the stove. “High-powered executives don’t ignore calls for long.”
Andrew stood slowly, his jaw tight. He walked over to the wall unit and checked the caller ID. It was his lead legal counsel, Richard Sterling. Richard only called directly when something catastrophic was happening.
Andrew pressed the return call button. “Sterling. Make it quick.”
“Andrew, we have a massive problem,” Richard’s voice crackled through the speaker, frantic and breathless. “The board of James Capital just received an anonymous dossier detailing your domestic situation—specifically focusing on the child’s psychological regression and your recent erratic behavior. They’re calling for an emergency vote tomorrow morning to invoke the morality clause and strip you of your CEO position.”
Andrew’s blood ran cold. The phone felt heavy in his hand. “Who leaked it? The dossier requires internal access. Only a handful of people have clearance to my private family files.”
“We’re tracing the IP address now, but that’s not all,” Richard continued, his voice dropping an octave. “The person who filed the motion with the board... it’s your late wife’s brother, Julian Vance. He’s claiming you’re an unfit father, citing the trauma and isolation in the penthouse, and he’s filing for full custody of Alex.”
The kitchen seemed to tilt on its axis. Julian Vance—a ruthless corporate raider who had spent years trying to sink his claws into James Capital—was weaponizing Emma’s death and Alex’s trauma to steal Andrew’s company and his son in a single, coordinated strike.
“He wants a war,” Andrew whispered, his voice dark and lethal.
“He’s bringing a nuclear bomb, Andrew,” Richard warned. “He has media outlets lined up outside the courthouse for tomorrow morning. If you don’t have a stable, pristine domestic image by 9:00 AM, the board will vote you out, and Julian will get temporary custody of the boy.”
Andrew hung up without saying another word. He stood motionless by the kitchen counter, the silence of the penthouse suddenly feeling less like peace and more like a trap snapping shut.
Elizabeth, who had overheard every word from across the room, turned off the burner beneath the chicken. She walked over, her expression unreadable.
“Julian Vance,” she said, her voice eerily calm. “Emma’s older brother. The man who tried to orchestrate a hostile takeover of your logistics division three years ago.”
Andrew looked at her in surprise. “You know him?”
“I know men like him,” Elizabeth replied, her eyes narrowing with a steely resolve. “They don’t care about the child. They care about leverage. If Julian gets custody of Alex, he controls your voting shares in James Capital through the child’s trust fund. He wins everything.”
“Not if I crush him first,” Andrew growled, the ruthless corporate titan surging back to the surface, fueled by a terrifying, protective fury. “I’ll bury him in litigation so deep his grandchildren will still be paying legal fees.”
“Litigation takes months, Andrew,” Elizabeth countered sharply, stepping directly into his space, her presence commanding his complete attention. “You don’t have months. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, the board votes, and the cameras roll. If Julian presents a picture of a broken, chaotic home with a traumatized, mute child, you lose.”
“Then what do we do?” Andrew asked, desperation bleeding through his hardened exterior for the first time.

Elizabeth looked down at Alex, who was quietly coloring his whale on the floor, completely unaware of the storm brewing around them. Then she looked back up at Andrew, a brilliant, dangerous plan forming in her eyes.
“We don’t hide the truth, Andrew,” she said softly. “We weaponize it.”
