Chapter 6 - A True Forever

The sun dipped below the Seattle skyline, painting the clouds in shades of bruised purple, amber, and gold.

Inside the small Ballard house, the scent of baking cookies filled the air. The kitchen was a disaster zone of flour, chocolate chips, and melted butter—a mess that Damon was currently trying to clean up while Violet supervised from her high chair, brandishing a wooden spoon like a scepter.

Cassandra sat on the living room floor, leaning back against the couch, watching the chaotic, beautiful normalcy of their evening.

The front door creaked open, and Damon walked in, wiping flour off his forehead with a dish towel, looking more relaxed than she had ever seen him in their entire lives. He dropped the towel on the counter, walked over, and slid down to the floor beside her, pulling her back against his chest.

"Are the kids finally asleep?" she whispered, closing her eyes as his arms wrapped securely around her.

"Out cold," Damon murmured against her hair. "Luke tried to negotiate another hour of TV by arguing that Santa was still watching, but sleep finally won."

Cassandra smiled, turning her head slightly so her cheek rested against his shoulder. "Do you realize how crazy this all is? One week ago, we were complete strangers passing in a crowded airport. Now we're sitting on the floor of a house we left behind three years ago."

"It’s not crazy," Damon said softly. "It’s destiny correcting its course."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box.

Cassandra froze, looking down at the box as he flipped it open. Inside rested a brand-new ring—not the simple silver band they had bought when they were nineteen, but a custom-designed diamond and platinum ring featuring a center stone surrounded by two smaller gems, perfectly representing the three lives that had been saved and reunited.

"I bought this six months ago," Damon confessed, his voice dropping into a register of raw, vulnerable sincerity. "I kept it in my office safe in Seattle, praying that one day I’d find you, and that you’d be willing to give me a second chance."

He slipped the ring from the box, took her left hand, and slid it onto her finger. It fit with absolute, breathtaking perfection.

"Cassandra Hayes-Prescott," Damon whispered, pressing a long, tender kiss to the back of her hand, then to her lips. "I was a fool who thought building a kingdom was more important than protecting my queen. Will you marry me again? Let me spend the rest of my life proving that I've learned my lesson."

Tears spilled over Cassandra’s lashes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder as her laughter mixed with happy sobs.

"Yes, Damon," she whispered against his skin. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

Outside, the snow began to fall softly over the quiet streets of Seattle, blanketing the city in white. Inside, the house was warm, filled with the gentle breathing of two sleeping children and the quiet, unbreakable promise of a family that had finally come home.
