Chapter 6 - The Broken Slipper

The morning of the closed audition arrived with a biting, gray frost that coated the windows of Studio One. The room was empty except for the three judges sitting at a long table: Eleanor Hayes, Pierre Laurent, and Charles Whitmore, who had flown back from London specifically to witness the selection.

Emily stood in the dressing room, adjusting the ribbons of her pink satin pointe shoes. She felt a strange, cold calm settling over her. She had practiced the Giselle Act I variation until her feet bled through the lamb's wool pads.

Vanessa stood at the opposite mirror, surrounded by her mother and Chloe. She looked flawless—her hair pulled into a severe, perfect bun without a single stray strand, her white audition leotard highlighting her long, aristocratic neck.

"Break a leg, Emily," Vanessa said as she walked past her toward the studio door. The smile on her face was sharp, bright, and predatory. "Literally."

Emily didn't think anything of the comment until she stood up to test her box on the rosin board.

As she stepped down hard onto her right pointe shoe, her ankle suddenly gave way with a sharp, sickening crack. She collapsed onto the bench, a gasp of agony escaping her lips.

"Emily!" Grace, who had been waiting by the door, rushed in, her face turning instantly white.

Emily pulled off her right shoe with shaking hands. The structural shank of the shoe—the thick, hardened piece of cardboard and leather that supports the dancer's arch—had been deeply, cleanly scored with a razor blade from the inside. The moment she had put her full weight onto the toes, the shank had snapped in half.

Without a solid shank, a dancer cannot stand on pointe. It was a career-ending injury waiting to happen. It was attempted sabotage that could have shattered Emily’s ankle permanently.

"That monster," Grace whispered, her eyes flashing with a terrifying, maternal rage. She looked toward the door where Vanessa’s mother was standing, a smug, satisfied smirk on her face. "I'll go to Mr. Whitmore right now. I'll show him—"

"No, Mom," Emily said, her voice shaking but hard as flint. She looked at the clock. There were exactly three minutes before her name was called. She had no backup pair broken in; a new pair would be too stiff to dance in without hours of preparation.

"You can't dance on a broken shank, Emily!" Grace cried, tears finally breaking past her eyelids. "You'll tear your ligaments!"

Emily looked at her old grey sneakers sitting in the corner of her locker. Then, she looked at her bare feet.

"Then I won't dance on pointe," Emily said.

She pulled off her tights, leaving her legs bare. She grabbed a pair of scissors from her dance bag and deliberately cut the ribbons off the broken shoes, wrapping them tightly around her bare ankles and arches to give her joints some structural compression. She stood up. Her bare soles met the freezing linoleum of the locker room floor.

"Emily, what are you doing?" Pierre Laurent asked as she walked into Studio One. He stared down at her bare feet in absolute horror. "This is a classical audition. You cannot perform Giselle without pointe shoes! It is against every regulation!"

"Let her dance, Pierre," Eleanor Hayes commanded from the table. Her eyes were fixed on Emily’s wrapped feet, her expression turning from surprise into an intense, burning curiosity. "The girl has no shoes. Let us see if she still has a dance."

Vanessa was already standing in the corner, having just finished her variation. Her performance had been mechanically flawless—a textbook rendition of the choreography that had drawn polite applause from Pierre. She looked at Emily’s bare feet and let out a short, triumphant laugh. "She’s disqualified. She doesn't even have the equipment."

Charles Whitmore didn't say a word. He simply leaned forward, his elbows on the table, his eyes fixed entirely on Emily.

"Whenever you are ready, Miss Carter," Eleanor said.

The music began—the bright, deceptive strings of the Giselle entrance.
