Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Federal Hill

Three months later.

The autumn air had turned into a crisp, beautiful winter morning. Snow dusted the manicured lawns of Federal Hill, covering the old estate in a blanket of clean, quiet white.

Allessandro Romano stood by the tall dining room window, a cup of steaming hot espresso in his hand. He looked out over the city he ruled.

The underworld was calm. The syndicate was quiet. Under his firm leadership, violence had plummeted across the territory. He had instituted new rules among the families: no civilian targets, no poisons, and strict protection for families and children. The dark mafia boss had become a respected ruler—a man known not just for his lethal strength, but for his absolute sense of justice.

Behind him, Marco walked into the room, holding a leather folder.

"The transport is ready, Boss," Marco said softly. "Maria and Emma are packed and waiting in the car. They are heading to the Newport house today."

Allessandro turned around. He set his cup down. "I'll walk them out."

Down at the main entrance, a sleek, armored limousine was idling, its exhaust floating into the cold winter air. Maria was wrapped in a beautiful cashmere coat, looking happier and healthier than ever.

Emma was wearing a small red winter coat and a matching hat, clutching her doll Rosie tight against her chest.

When she saw Allessandro walk down the front steps, she let go of her mother's hand and ran toward him.

Allessandro bent down and caught her, picking her up in his arms—a gesture the feared mob boss had never made for anyone in his life.

"Are you ready for your new house, Emma?" Allessandro asked, adjusting her red hat over her ears.

"Yes!" Emma squeaked. "Mama said there's a big tree in the yard where we can build a swing!"

"There is," Allessandro smiled. "And I'll come visit every weekend to make sure the swing is built right."

He looked at Maria, who gave him a deep, respectful nod of profound gratitude.

"Thank you, Allessandro," Maria said softly, using his first name for the very first time. "You gave us a life we never dreamed we could have."

"You gave me a life I almost lost," Allessandro replied earnestly.

He set Emma back down on her feet. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, placing it into Emma's small hands.

"What's this?" Emma asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.

"Open it."

Emma popped the velvet latch open. Inside lay a small, beautifully crafted gold pendant in the shape of a tiny shield, set with a brilliant diamond in the center. Engraved on the back in delicate script were the words: Guardian of the Romano Family.

"If you ever need anything," Allessandro whispered, kissing her forehead softly, "if you are ever scared, if anyone ever dares to hurt you... you show them that shield. And the entire world will know you are protected by Allessandro Romano."

Emma beamed, hugging the velvet box to her chest alongside her cloth doll. "Thank you, Uncle Allessandro!"
