Chapter 5 - The Debt Repaid

An hour later, the rain began to clear over the city, revealing pale streaks of silver light breaking through the November clouds.

At a secure, private estate in Long Island, far away from the grime of the city, a long black limousine pulled up the sweeping driveway.

Alessandro stepped out first. He walked around to the back door, opened it, and offered his hand to Elena. She took it, stepping out onto the soft grass, holding Mateo tightly against her hip.

Beside them stood little Emma, wearing a warm pink wool coat that Elena had wrapped around her, holding her mother’s hand. Emma's mother, a tired widow who had been forced to keep quiet under Julian's threats, stood behind them weeping with relief.

"This is your home now," Alessandro said to Emma's mother. "You and your daughter will never have to worry about rent, safety, or cold floors again. You saved my life today by letting your daughter walk outside."

Emma looked up at the grand mansion, her eyes wide with wonder. "It has two windows on top," she whispered to Mateo, pointing at the dormer windows above the front entrance. "Just like your drawings."

Mateo looked at his father, then at Emma, and gave a small, happy nod.

Alessandro turned to Elena. They looked at each other for a long moment, carrying the weight of a year’s worth of pain, deception, and stolen time.

Alessandro reached out and pulled Elena into his chest. She broke down, wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face in his neck as a year of accumulated fear finally melted away into tears of relief.

"It's over, Elena," Alessandro whispered into her hair. "The snakes are gone. The house is clean."
