Chapter 4 - The Rain on the River

Midnight at the abandoned naval shipyard in Red Hook, Brooklyn, was a place built for ghosts and violence.

A cold, torrential rain poured from the black sky, turning the cracked asphalt into a sea of murky puddles. The wind roared off the East River, slamming against the rusted corrugated metal walls of the ancient warehouses.

Parked on the slick pavement were four black sedans belonging to the Marcone family, their headlights shining brightly through the storm, illuminating a single, empty point in the center of the yard.

Dominic Marcone stood under a large black umbrella held by one of his bodyguards. He was a broad, heavy man in his sixties, wearing a expensive leather coat, his face red and bloated from years of scotch and arrogance. Ten heavily armed men stood around him, their hands buried in their coat pockets, waiting.

From the shadows across the yard, a single set of headlights appeared.

A lone black Maybach pulled to a stop twenty feet away.

The door opened, and Damian Conti stepped out into the freezing rain. He wore no raincoat, no hat—just his dark suit, walking slowly forward through the storm with his hands buried casually in his trousers pockets.

He came alone. No bodyguards, no motorcade. Just one man walking into a trap.

Dominic Marcone laughed loudly, a raspy, booming sound that carried over the howl of the wind.

"Look at you, Conti!" Dominic sneered, stepping forward. "The great King of Manhattan, walking into my yard like a dog looking for a bone! Where's your army, Damian? Where are your bodyguards?"

Damian stopped ten feet away from Dominic. The rain washed over his dark hair, running down his sharp jawline, but his eyes were completely calm—like the eye of a hurricane.

"I didn't need an army to deal with you, Dominic," Damian said smoothly, his voice effortlessly cutting through the sound of the gale.

Dominic’s smile faded, replaced by an ugly, venomous scowl. "You think you're untouchable, don't you? You took my blood! You hid my niece and her bastard child in your house like they belong to you!"

"Clara and Lily are under my protection, Dominic," Damian said quietly. "They will remain under my protection for the rest of their lives. You will never speak their names again, you will never send a man near them, and you will leave New York by sunrise."

Dominic stared at him in utter disbelief before bursting into a vicious, hysterical laugh.

"Are you insane?!" Dominic roared, pulling a thick yellow folder from inside his coat and holding it up against the rain. "I have the federal wiretaps right here! One phone call to the U.S. Attorney, and your whole empire crumbles by morning! You have no leverage, Conti! You surrender the girl, or you die in a federal prison!"

Damian didn't look at the folder. He slowly raised his left hand, looking at his watch.

"12:08 AM," Damian murmured.

Dominic frowned, his eyes narrowing. "What?"

"At 12:05 AM," Damian explained smoothly, looking up at Dominic with a cold, terrifying smile, "my intelligence team executed a simultaneous takeover of your three main distribution hubs in New Jersey. At 12:06 AM, your senior underboss, Frankie Vane, accepted five million dollars to hand over your primary offshore account ledgers to the District Attorney."

Dominic’s face instantly drained of every drop of color. "You're... you're lying..."

"And at 12:07 AM," Damian continued, taking one slow, lethal step forward, "the federal prosecutors you were planning to call were handed a complete video file of you ordering the dock explosion that killed your brother Joseph fifteen years ago."

Dominic’s knees buckled. He dropped his umbrella into the mud, his hands trembling violently as he stared at Damian in pure, unadulterated horror.

"You... you knew about Joseph?" Dominic squeaked out, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine.

"Clara’s father was a good man, Dominic," Damian whispered, closing the distance between them until he was standing inches away from the trembling old mob boss. "You murdered him to steal his territory. And then you tried to break his daughter. Did you really think I wouldn't look into who she was before I decided to tear you apart?"

Dominic reached frantically into his coat for his gun, but before his hand could even touch his holster, the shadows around the warehouse erupted.

Red laser sights flooded the rainy yard.

Over twenty Conti tactical operatives stepped out from the darkness of the surrounding shipping containers, their silenced rifles pointed directly at the heads of Dominic's ten bodyguards.

Dominic’s men instantly dropped their weapons onto the wet pavement, raising their hands in absolute surrender.

Dominic fell to his knees in a deep puddle, sobbing hysterically as the rain soaked his leather coat. "Damian... please... we're old family... please..."

Damian looked down at the broken man kneeling at his feet with total disgust.

"You are not family, Dominic," Damian said softly, turning his back on him and walking back toward his Maybach. "Nico. Hand him over to the federal authorities. Make sure he spends the rest of his pathetic life in a six-by-eight cell."
