Chapter 5 - The Blood Covenant

Three months later.

The summer sun beamed brightly over the green hills of the Moretti vineyard in Tuscany.

The grand stone villa, which had once felt like a cold, silent fortress of secrets, was now filled with the warm sounds of life, music, and children’s laughter.

In the center of the garden, sitting on a soft woolen blanket under the shade of an ancient olive tree, was eight-year-old Leo Moretti.

He looked completely transformed. His cheeks were round and pink, his gray eyes sparkled with health, and his hair was neatly trimmed. Resting in a small wicker bassinet beside him was his baby brother—whom Rocco had officially named Gabriel Moretti, legally adopting him into the main family branch with full heir rights.

Leo reached out, gently rattling a small silver toy for baby Gabriel, who kicked his chubby feet and let out a happy, bubbling squeal.

Sitting nearby at a wrought-iron garden table were Elena Bellini and her daughter, Sophia.

Elena was no longer the house maid. Rocco had appointed her as the Estate Manager of the Tuscan property, granting her a private cottage on the grounds and a permanent stipend that guaranteed Sophia’s education through university.

Sophia, wearing a yellow sundress, was sitting on the grass beside Leo, showing him how to weave wild clover into flower crowns.

Rocco walked out from the villa’s French doors, dressed in a comfortable linen shirt and dark trousers. He looked younger, the harsh, cynical lines around his eyes softened by a peace he had never believed possible for a man of his trade.

He walked over to the garden table, pulling out a chair, and set down a small leather document folder in front of Sophia.

Sophia looked up from her flower crown, her big brown eyes curious. “What’s this, Mr. Moretti?”

Rocco smiled warmly—a real, genuine smile that reached all the way to his eyes.

“Open it, little angel,” Rocco said quietly.

Sophia untied the silk ribbon and opened the folder. Inside was an official, gold-embossed legal deed stamped by the Supreme Court of Italy.

“It is the deed to the St. Helena Children’s Educational Trust,” Thomas Russo explained, stepping up behind Rocco with a briefcase. “A fifty-million-dollar endowment created in your name, Sophia. It funds medical care, housing, and education for abandoned and orphaned children across the entire region.”

Sophia gasped, her hands trembling as she looked at her mother. Elena began to weep quiet tears of joy, covering her mouth with her hand.

“You saved my son, Sophia,” Rocco said, kneeling beside the eight-year-old girl, taking her small hand in his large, scarred palm. “When everyone else in that house walked past the dark corners, you stopped. You listened to a tiny cry in the trash. You brought my blood back into the light.”

Sophia looked over at Leo and baby Gabriel playing under the olive tree.

“He was just a baby, Mr. Moretti,” Sophia said simply, her innocent voice carrying more wisdom than all the chieftains in Rome. “No one should ever be left in the dark.”

Rocco squeezed her hand gently. “No one ever will be again in this house. That is a Moretti promise.”
