Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Endgame

The humid subterranean air hung heavy with tension. Viktor’s shotgun was aimed squarely at Julian’s head, his finger resting lightly on the trigger, waiting for a single twitch from the bound lawyer. But Julian didn't flinch. He sat back in the chair with an infuriating, unearned sense of absolute victory.

"You think you hold all the cards, Julian," Spencer said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he lowered his weapon just an inch—not out of submission, but out of absolute contempt.

"I hold the only card that matters," Julian snapped, his smug facade cracking slightly at the edges. "The baby. If you try anything clever, Viktor’s bullet won't reach me before my associates on the surface inject a fatal cardiac arrest agent into your precious little heir. The timer is ticking, Spencer. Ten minutes. Sign the transfer papers, or you’ll be burying another Warren before midnight."

Spencer stared at the laptop screen displaying the flashing transfer authorization portal. For a long, agonizing moment, the silence in the underground lab was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the medical refrigerators in the corner.

Then, a low, melodic chime echoed from the smart-tablet resting on the edge of the lab counter.

Julian’s eyes darted toward the tablet. "What is that?"

Spencer didn't answer. He reached out with his left hand, picked up the tablet, and tapped the screen, activating the live high-definition camera feed from the estate's western gatehouse.

On the screen, the heavy iron gates were wide open. But instead of Julian’s associates holding a baby hostage, the view showed three unmarked federal black-and-white cruisers idling smoothly on the asphalt, their emergency lights flashing a silent, ominous blue against the dark pines. Stepping out of the lead vehicle, flanked by federal marshals and local tactical units, was Casey, the child welfare worker—holding a bundle wrapped in a blue blanket.

Beside her was Mrs. Mabel, holding Charlee’s small hand securely in hers.

Julian’s face went completely, ghastly white. He lunged forward in his chair, the metal legs scraping violently against the concrete. "No! That's impossible! My men were guarding the perimeter guardhouse!"

"Your men were good, Julian," Spencer said coldly, tossing the tablet onto the desk in front of the bound lawyer. "But they were mercenaries. And mercenaries work for whoever pays fifty percent more than your market rate. Viktor didn't just drive me here from the hospital—he routed our encrypted communications directly through the Department of Homeland Security’s financial crimes division two hours ago when we intercepted your first threatening call."

Julian let out a guttural roar of absolute fury, thrashing against the zip ties binding his wrists to the chair. "You tricked me! You were playing for time!"

"I always win my cases, Julian," Spencer replied, stepping close enough to look down into the desperate, sweating face of the man he had trusted for a decade. "The only difference is that this time, you aren't standing on the right side of the courtroom."

The heavy steel door of the lab swung open wide, and three federal marshals swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for kidnapping, extortion, conspiracy, and racketeering," the lead marshal announced, grabbing Julian by the shoulders and ripping the plastic zip ties off with a sharp snap.

As Julian was hauled away, kicking and screaming obscenities into the damp air, Pamela collapsed into a chair, burying her face in her hands as she wept out loud in overwhelming relief.

Spencer didn't wait to watch them haul Julian away. He turned on his heel, his long strides carrying him out of the subterranean lab and back up the concrete stairs toward the warm, brightly lit foyer of the mansion.
