Chapter 1: The Protocol of Cruelty

William Parker sat perfectly still, a silver fork hovering inches from a fifty-dollar plate of seared duck breast.

At thirty-four, William was the youngest venture capitalist to dominate Wall Street. The media called him the "Ghost Investor" because he operated in the shadows, buying up failing companies, stripping them of their dead weight, and turning them into gold. He was a man who calculated everything in algorithms and margins. Emotions were a liability.

He looked at the girl. Her face was smudged with city grime, her oversized sweater clearly a hand-me-down, but her posture was straight. And then his eyes drifted down to the bundle tied to her chest. A tiny baby, pale and entirely too quiet, was peeking out from a faded floral bedsheet.

Before William could speak, the restaurant’s manager, a man named Henderson whose suit cost more than Emma’s family probably saw in a month, rushed over. His face was flushed with deep embarrassment.

"I am so incredibly sorry, Mr. Parker," Henderson hissed, grabbing Emma roughly by the upper arm. "This is highly unusual. Security is supposed to keep the vagrants off the block. Come with me, young lady, before I call the police."

"Don't touch her," William said. His voice wasn't loud, but it had the chilling authority of a man who owned the very building the restaurant was housed in.

Henderson froze, his hand dropping instantly. "Sir, she's disrupting the lunch service—"

"I said, leave her," William repeated, his dark eyes locking onto Emma. He laid his fork down with a quiet clink. "You want the leftovers?"

Emma swallowed hard, her small hands tightening around the makeshift baby carrier. "Yes, sir. Please. Just the meat. Or the bread. Anything you aren't going to finish. My grandma is sick, and Noah... Noah didn't have enough today."

William looked at the plate. Then he looked at the manager. "Henderson, bring a fresh menu. And a bowl of warm milk and a spoon."

"Mr. Parker, our policy strictly forbids—"

"I own thirty percent of this hospitality group, Henderson," William said coldly, leaning back in his chair. "Do you want to discuss policy, or do you want to keep your job?"

Within two minutes, a fresh plate of roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and soft bread was placed on the table, alongside a small bowl of warm milk. William pulled out the velvet chair next to him. "Sit."

Emma hesitated, looking around at the wealthy patrons who were whispering behind their linen napkins. But the smell of fresh food was overwhelming. She sat down, her hands trembling as she immediately took a piece of bread, dipped it into the warm milk, and gently pressed it against little Noah’s lips. The baby reacted instantly, sucking ravenously. Tears slipped down Emma's cheeks, but she didn't make a sound. She just kept feeding him.

"Where are your parents?" William asked, his cold exterior showing the first microscopic fracture.

"My mom left a long time ago," Emma whispered, not breaking her focus on the baby. "It's just me, Grandma Martha, and Noah. But a man stole our pension money from the machine last week. We don't have anything left."

William's phone suddenly buzzed on the table. It was a text from his lead corporate investigator.

“Sir, we found the leak in Parker Holdings. It’s your cousin, Thomas. He’s been funneling corporate funds into an offshore account. He’s planning to frame your personal assistant tomorrow morning.”

William stared at the screen. Betrayal from his own blood. It was the story of his life. Everyone wanted something from him. Everyone lied. Yet here was an eleven-year-old girl who had walked into a lion's den of billionaires, begging not for money, not for a handout, but for the literal scraps off a stranger's plate just to keep a baby alive.

"Eat," William said, his voice dropping its icy edge entirely. "Eat the rest, Emma. When you're done, we're going to pay a visit to your grandmother."
