Chapter 5 - The Battle for the Empire

The peace that followed was short-lived.

The Moretti family, enraged by the failure of their assassination attempt, launched an all-out war against the Vance syndicate across New York and New Jersey. Ports were blockaded, warehouses burned, and Cassian was forced to spend long days away from the estate, securing his supply lines and retaliating with brutal efficiency.

However, this time, Cassian was not fighting out of cold obligation or bitter vengeance. He was fighting for a future.

Clara remained at the estate, but she was no longer treated as a maid. She sat beside Cassian in high-level strategy meetings, her sharp mind and keen observation skills helping Nolan identify logistical gaps in the syndicate’s supply chains. The guards who had once looked down on her now bowed their heads in deep respect whenever she walked past with Brutus at her side.

In late December, heavy snow blanketed the estate.

Cassian received intelligence that Don Victor Moretti—the head of the rival family—was hiding in an abandoned naval shipyard in Jersey City, preparing to flee the country with fifty million dollars in stolen syndicate assets.

“I’m coming with you,” Clara said firmly as Cassian strapped a shoulder holster over his tactical turtleneck in the armory.

“Absolutely not,” Cassian said sternly, turning to face her. “It’s an active war zone, Clara.”

“Victor Moretti’s primary lieutenant is Julian Rossi,” Clara said, pulling a tablet from her bag. “I recognized his name from the old shipping ledgers I reorganized in your library last week. Rossi didn't transfer those funds through Switzerland; he used an old Italian agricultural bank in Naples—the same bank my mother used for her small farm. I know how to track those accounts, Cassian. Without me, you’ll capture the man, but lose the empire’s money.”

Cassian stared at her, a mixture of awe and profound pride sweeping across his face.

“You are entirely too smart for me, Clara Vance,” he murmured, stepping forward and kissing her deeply.

“It’s Doyle,” she teased, smiling against his lips.

“Not for long,” he growled softly in her ear.

An hour later, six armored SUVs tore through the snow toward Jersey City.

The assault on the naval shipyard was fast, surgical, and devastating. Cassian’s tactical units breached the perimeter within minutes.

Clara remained inside the command SUV with Nolan, monitoring the encrypted financial transfers on her laptop. As Cassian’s team pushed deeper into the main warehouse, Clara noticed a sudden spike in data traffic originating from a secondary freighter docked on the icy river.

“Nolan!” Clara called out over the com-link. “Moretti isn't in the warehouse! He’s on the cargo ship The Black Siren! He’s setting an automated scuttle order to destroy the financial drives!”

Over the earpiece, Cassian’s voice came through, heavy with gunfire. “Understood. Nolan, stay with her!”

Before Nolan could react, Clara grabbed a handheld terminal, opened the SUV door, and called out, “Brutus! Heel!”

The massive mastiff, equipped with a heavy tactical vest, leaped from the rear of the vehicle.

Clara sprinted across the snow-covered dock toward the gangway of The Black Siren, guided by Brutus’s powerful instincts. They slipped onto the lower deck just as Victor Moretti and his remaining three bodyguards were preparing to lower a lifeboat into the freezing Hudson River.

“Stop!” Clara shouted, stepping into the dim light of the deck, holding the terminal. “The network bypass is locked, Moretti! You can’t transfer a single dollar!”

Moretti—a greasy, aging man with sharp features—turned in shock. “What is this? Who sent a girl to stop me?!”

One of the bodyguards drew a weapon, but Brutus didn't hesitate. With a terrifying roar that echoed across the icy harbor, the mastiff launched himself forward, pinning the armed guard against the steel bulkhead.

Moretti panicked, pulling a small derringer from his coat, aiming directly at Clara.

“Die, you little bitch—”

A loud shot cracked through the night air.

Moretti’s gun clattered to the deck as he collapsed onto his knees, clutching a shattered shoulder.

Cassian stepped out from the shadows of the wheelhouse, his gun raised, his eyes blazing with cold, lethal authority. Behind him walked twenty armed Vance soldiers.

Cassian stepped over Moretti’s groaning form, barely giving the rival Don a second glance. He walked straight to Clara, pulling her hard against his chest, checking her face and arms with frantic hands.

“Are you hurt? Did he touch you?” Cassian demanded, his voice shaking with adrenaline.

“I’m fine,” Clara breathed, holding his face. “We stopped them, Cassian. It’s over.”

Cassian looked at Moretti, then down at Brutus, who was proudly sitting beside Clara, wagging his heavy tail.

Cassian turned to Nolan. “Clean this up. Put Moretti in a cell beneath the estate. He will sign over every asset he owns before sunrise.”

Cassian then scooped Clara into his arms, carrying her down the gangway toward the warm SUV as snow began to fall softly over the conquered docks.

“You are crazy, Clara Doyle,” Cassian murmured, kissing her cold nose as he placed her in the heated leather seat. “Brunt, brave, and completely crazy.”

“I learned from the best,” she smiled, resting her head on his broad shoulder.
