Chapter 3 - The Threat from the Shadows

By the third month, the progress was undeniable. Liam now happily slept in Evelyn's arms, ran to her when he scraped his knee, and had finally spoken his second major word: "Mama."
The bond between Evelyn and Noah had also shifted from tense co-existence to a deep, profound intimacy. They shared quiet breakfasts while Liam threw cheerios on the floor, and spent evenings talking about Evelyn's dreams of going back to school for interior design. Noah listened to her with a respect no man had ever shown her before.
But the peaceful bubble exploded on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
A sharp knock at the study door interrupted Noah while he was showing Evelyn some of Liam's baby photos. It was Richard Vance, the ruthless head of the Whitmore corporate board and a distant cousin who had long coveted Noah’s position as CEO.
Richard walked into the room, his eyes scanning Evelyn with a cold, predatory disdain.
"Noah," Richard said, tossing a thick legal manila folder onto the mahogany desk. "The board has been reviewing your recent personal expenditures. Millions spent on private medical care for a stranger, a legal petition for temporary guardianship of an unrelated child, and now... housing the mother in your private estate."
Noah’s jaw clenched, his posture instantly turning into granite. "My personal finances are none of the board's business, Richard."
"They are when you're using corporate-backed holding funds to secure the temporary guardianship," Richard sneered. "The board feels this... situation... is a massive PR liability. A multi-billion-dollar CEO playing savior to a girl from the slums who can't even pay her own medical bills."
Evelyn felt the familiar, burning humiliation wash over her, but before she could stand up, Noah stepped in front of her, completely shielding her from Richard's view.
"Watch your tongue, Richard," Noah said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, freezing register.
"I'm just giving you a warning, cousin," Richard whispered maliciously. "If you don't return the child to the state foster system or sever ties with this woman by the end of the month, the board will launch a full character investigation. We’ll expose the fact that your brother caused the accident. The press will say you bought the mother's silence. We'll strip your CEO title, and I will personally ensure child services re-evaluates this girl's fitness as a disabled, unemployed single mother."
Richard turned on his heel and walked out, leaving a suffocating silence in his wake.
Evelyn collapsed into the office chair, her hands covering her face. "He's right, Noah. I don't have a job. I'm still using a cane. If they take this to court, the state will see me as unstable. They'll take Liam away from both of us."

Noah knelt in front of her, gently but firmly pulling her hands away from her face. His gray eyes were burning with a fierce, protective fire.
"They will never touch you, Evelyn. And they will never take our boy," Noah said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "I built this empire, and I can burn Richard’s career to ashes before sunset. But we need to make your position unassailable. I have a solution. But it requires you to trust me completely."
