CHAPTER 1: THE WOMAN IN THE KITCHEN

Lily Monroe stood at the kitchen sink with soap covering her hands and tears streaming down her face.
Beyond the swinging doors, music thundered through the mansion.
Guests laughed beneath crystal chandeliers.
Champagne flowed freely.
And Adrian Whitmore’s birthday party continued as if the woman crying over dirty dishes didn’t exist.
Lily lowered her head and scrubbed harder.
If she worked quietly enough, maybe no one would notice her humiliation.
Maybe no one would remember what Helena Whitmore had done.
Just an hour earlier, Lily had arrived carrying a small wrapped gift.
She never intended to make a scene.
She only wanted Adrian to know the truth.
But Helena had intercepted her before she reached the ballroom.
“A woman like you doesn't belong with the guests,” Helena had said coldly.
Then she handed Lily an apron.
“If you want to stay, make yourself useful.”
The guests laughed.
No one defended her.
And now Lily stood alone in the kitchen, washing dishes while the party celebrated without her.
Then suddenly—
The kitchen door burst open.
Adrian Whitmore stepped inside.
His deep red suit contrasted sharply with the white kitchen walls.
His face was dark with anger.
“What is going on here?”
Lily froze.
She couldn’t look at him.
Behind Adrian came Helena.
Elegant.
Confident.
Smiling.
“Don't be dramatic,” Helena said smoothly.
“She volunteered to help.”
Adrian’s eyes shifted toward Lily.
He saw the trembling hands.
The soaked apron.
The tears she was desperately trying to hide.
Something inside him changed.
He crossed the room in seconds.
“Look at me.”
His voice was gentle now.
“Did you really choose this?”
Lily’s lips trembled.
But before she could answer, tears spilled down her cheeks.
And Adrian realized someone had been lying.
Someone had gone out of their way to put her there.
The question was...
Why?
